EXCERPT:

A sudden crash outside the garage sounded like a car wreck at high speed or, more precisely, a head-on collision. The ground beneath Emma’s feet shook. She lost her balance and stumbled toward the door. Outside, she expected to see a horrible motor vehicle accident and bodies strewn everywhere.

But there was no crash.

No cars.

No one.

Nothing else, except the house and…

She turned back to the garage. Her breath caught in her lungs. What had been the spotless three-car garage was now a two-story wood barn. A buckboard sat to the side. A tall windmill towered behind the wood structure; on the opposite side, a horse grazed in a paddock.

And one very tall and handsome man with piercing blue eyes that rivaled the Montana sky stood before her. His thick blond hair caressed his forehead. He wiped his hands on a rag, then tucked it into the side of his denim overalls. His rolled-up shirt sleeves exposed tanned muscular forearms. Where did he come from?

She glanced at the house, at him, then back again, and trembled involuntarily. The house had suddenly changed. It looked different—the roof had shingles. Smoke billowed out of the chimney, the smell filling her head.

“Ma’am?” The man’s gaze swept over her from head to toe; a gentle smile touched his lips. Something akin to recognition flickered in his eyes. “Are you…lost?”

Who is this guy, why is he here, and how the hell did my life just get turned upside down?

#Thriller Thursday #The Wrong Bones ( Widow’s Island Novella 10) by Melinda Leigh @Montlake

Synopsis:
A frantic chase to catch a grave robber reveals a startling discovery in this tenth installment of the Widow’s Island novella series by Wall Street Journal bestselling author Melinda Leigh.

Deputy Tessa Black spots a man disturbing a grave in the local cemetery and gives chase. But when Tessa catches him, she learns that the ghoulish trespasser wasn’t robbing graves; he was burying a box of bones.

With the help of her fiancé, park ranger Logan Wilde, Tessa discovers that the remains belong to a missing teenager from a nearby island. After the girl disappeared nine months ago, police labeled her a runaway. Now, though, it’s clear the teenager was murdered.

When the only witness is an uncooperative teenager, Tessa and Logan must find the killer before the boy becomes the next target.

Widow Island Series:
1 Close to the Bone
2 A Bone to Pick
3 Whisper of Bones
4 Bred in the Bone
5 Below the Bones
6 A Broken Bone
7 Buried Bones
8 The Lost Bones
9 Bone Deep
10 The Wrong Bones

My thoughts:
The Wrong Bones is the tenth novella in Widow Island series written by Melinda Leigh and Kendra Elliot. If you have been following the series, you are surely going to enjoy the happy finale, but all good things come to an end and this is the last instalment in the series. It was amazing to see this wonderful collaboration with the stories from the two authors (Melinda Leigh wrote books 2,3, 6,7, and 10, Kendra Elliot -1,4,5,8, and 9) merging seemlessly into one cohesive narrative.

Melinda Leigh’s novella are written from the point of view of Deputy Tessa Black, while Kendra Elliot’s ones focus on Tessa’s best friend Cate, a former FBI agent, who also happens to be Tessa’s fiance Logan’s sister.

Tessa Black has a complicated family life. Her mother has been diagnosed with an early onset dementia and Tessa is taking care of both her and Tessa’s much younger half-sister Patience. While Tessa knows nothing is going to change the course of her mother’s dementia, she tries to help Patience have as normal and stable life as possible in the circumstances. Luckily, Logan Wilde, Tessa’s fiance and the only park ranger on the island, is her rock of strength, and the whole island community pulls together to take care of Tessa’s mother.

Tessa responds to frantic calls of three kids who have spotted a stranger digging a grave at the island’s cemetery. Although the chase Tessa gives the stranger isn’t successful, the man drops a box he was trying to bury in the grave and the box is full of human bones. The remains belong to a teenage girl who was clearly murdered, but who was she and who is the monster behind the crime? Suspects abound and Tessa and Logan have to move fast to make sure the killer doesn’t get away with the crime.

The pace was excellent and there was a lot of action packed into the story which culminated in a nail-biting finish that would have made Hollywood action movie writers proud. Fans of Melinda Leigh know she has a very engaging writing style that compels her readers to keep turning pages until the small hours.

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the review copy, provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

#Can’t Wait Wednesday #Hidden Scars (DI Kim Stone 17) by Angela Marsons #Police Procedural #Thriller @ Bookouture

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you’re continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well! Find out more here.

And the book I am waiting for is…

From the blurb:

While Jamie’s cold, lifeless body lay in the morgue, Detective Kim Stone stared at the empty board in the incident room and felt her anger boil. Why were there no photos, details, or lines of enquiry?

When a nineteen-year-old boy, Jamie Mills, is found hanging from a tree in a local park, his death is ruled a suicide. Detective Kim Stone’s instincts tell her something isn’t right – but it’s not her investigation and her temporary replacement is too busy waiting for the next big case to be asking the right questions.

Why would a seemingly healthy boy choose to end his life?
Why does his mother show no sign of emotional distress at the loss of her son?

Still mending her broken mind and body from her last harrowing case, Kim is supposed to be easing back into work gently. But then she finds a crucial, overlooked detail: Jamie had a recent injury that would have made it impossible for him to climb the tree. He must have been murdered.

Quickly taking back charge of her team and the case, Kim visits Jamie’s parents and is shocked to hear that they had sent him to a clinic to ‘cure’ him of his sexuality. According to his mother, Jamie was introverted and prone to mood swings. Yet his friend speaks of a vibrant, outgoing boy.

The clues to smashing open this disturbing case lie behind the old Victorian walls of the clinic, run by the Gardner family. They claim that patients come of their own accord and are free to leave at any time. But why are those that attended the clinic so afraid to speak of what happens there? And where did the faded restraint marks identified on Jamie’s wrists come from?

Then the body of a young woman is found dead by suffocation and Kim makes two chilling discoveries. The victim spent time at the clinic too, and her death was also staged to look like a suicide.

Scarred from an ordeal that nearly took her life, is Kim strong enough to stop a terrifying killer from silencing the clinic’s previous patients one by one?

A compulsive page-turner that will have your heart hammering in your chest and leave you absolutely reeling when you discover the explosive final twist. If you’re a fan of Karin Slaughter, Val McDermid, and Robert Dugoni, you’ll love Hidden Scars.

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance, Suspense

In the face of a storm, a father’s love is the most powerful force.

With Hurricane Florence rapidly approaching the North Carolina coastline, all Niles North can think about is his five-year-old son Riley and how he wished he bent the law when he had the chance to evacuate him. Her remaining relatives are the elusive Hawthornes, an eccentric family living at Thorn Grove, an estate both glittering and gloomy. Its patriarch mourns his late wife through wild parties, while his son grapples for control of the family’s waning reputation and his daughter suffers from a mysterious illness. But when their mother’s restless spirit appears claiming she was poisoned, Signa realizes that the family she depends on could be in grave danger and enlists the help of a surly stable boy to hunt down the killer.

However, Signa’s best chance of uncovering the murderer is an alliance with Death himself, a fascinating, dangerous shadow who has never been far from her side. Though he’s made her life a living hell, Death shows Signa that their growing connection may be more powerful—and more irresistible—than she ever dared imagine.

It’s Monday! What are you reading? August 29th, 2022

It’s Monday! What are you Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn from Book Date, a place to share and discuss what we’ve read in the past week and what we’re in the middle of or are planning to read this week.

What I read / listened to last week:

Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson- this little beauty suddenly appeared in my library, so if course I grabbed it and forgot about upcoming arcs and blog tours, shopping and housework…and just binged on fantasy. If you’ve read the book, it is about libraries and living, screaming, kicking books with magic at heart, duels and romance, houses that have power to heal you and nightmares that fill the world with fluffy snow…above all, it’s about unlikely friends- what more could I ask from a book…loved it!

Starting over in Bellbird Bay by Maggie Christensen

What I am reading/listening to now:

Gallant by V.E.Shwab– From what I’ve gathered from my friends, the author’s writing style is a bit of a hit or miss with readers, but I’m really enjoying this ghostly story.

Cackle by Rachel Harrison- what an unusual book! Probably would have been better to save this read for October, but any season is good for a good witchy story.

What I’m reading /listening to next:

Stay Awake by Megan Goldin- hopefully I’ll get to this one this week. After all, it comes highly recommended by Carla from Carlalovestoread (review of Stay Awake, Wrong Place, Wrong Time, and 56 Days) and Yesha from booksteacupreviews (review of Stay Awake). Check out their reviews and you’ll see why this latest thriller from Megan Goldin is so popular.

How did your last week go and what are you reading this week?

#Guest Post by Laura Briggs #5 Reasons to read Return to Cornwall series #Giveaway @rararesources

Today I’m delighted to present a guest post by Laura Briggs as a part of a promo blitz for the release of Return to Cornwall 1-6 Box Set.

Reasons to Binge Read Return to Cornwall the Series

(Guest post by Laura Briggs)

Thanks so much for this chance to share about my Cornish romance reads with everyone at Reading Tonic! I’m thrilled to tell you about my latest box set, which features the first six books in my new series about event planner Julianne’s life in an idyllic (and quirky) little village. There’s plenty of romance, laughter, and heartwarming moments within its pages—and a few surprises as well. I thought it might be fun to share a few of the reasons readers might enjoy binge reading the first part of the series, now that it’s finally available in one handy collection. So here goes!

It makes for quick, light reading

Fans of the series often comment on how fast the books seem to go—and how they can’t wait to start reading the next one. They love the quirky characters and setting and say it feels like dropping in to visit friends, something any author would be happy to hear. They also use descriptions like ‘escapist’ and ‘page-turner’, and seem to enjoy the fact that Julianne’s village is a sleepy little setting that just happens to host some rather colorful events, including a reality show bake-off contest and a charming Christmas market and winter fete rolled into one. There’s always something going on…and always something new awaits just around the next story’s corner, which leads to another reason readers might want to binge read these books.

Things change fast in Julianne’s world

Her life is busy, and there are big changes from season to season—and book to book, too! So whether it’s her and Kitty planning a make-or-break wedding at their new firm, or Julianne facing a crisis of the heart when it comes to family matters, there’s always something to shake things up for our characters. New faces to meet, old friends to welcome back, and bigger, oft-unexpected challenges on the horizon. But some problems don’t get solved within the pages of just one book…which brings to mind another reason to reach for the binge-able edition of Julianne’s adventures.

There are continuing storylines

Not the dramatic cliffhanger sort, but there are a few loose threads that travel from book to book. Readers quickly found this true of the romance between manor house chef Michael and the comedienne Kimmie, whose friendship sparked an attraction that neither knew quite how to deal with. And then there’s the matter of shy foster child Joel and whether he’ll ever feel at home in Julianne’s family. Proving that even Julianne’s village isn’t perfect, with the sweet balanced by a little reality in the way that escapist fiction can truly do.

Hopefully this has intrigued you enough to give Julianne’s adventures a whirl. They go great with a cuppa (and a biscuit!) and make for a fun bit of escapism on a rainy day.

Return to Cornwall: Books 1-6

The first six books in the heartfelt UK series are now available in one collection!

From a runaway bride to a reality baking show competition, to rumors of a haunted wood and, of course, a Christmas of the cosiest kind, there’s never a dull moment for event planner Julianne in the quirky village she calls home.

This book bundle contains Wedding Vows and Cornish Ribbons, Cornish Sweets and Wedding Treats, Spring Roses Under Topaz Skies, Cornish Gold at Summer’s End, Walnut Mince Pies at the Frost Fete, Secrets and Sunsets at Azure Bay.
