Today is my stop on the blog tour for A Deadly Deal, the first book in Deal series by Simon Fairfax. If you like historical crime thrillers, flawed characters and complex plots, check out this story of corporate espionage and insider trading.

A Deadly Deal

Moneymakers are king, no matter their methods. When an honest man stumbles into their world of deceit, will they drag him down to destruction?

London, 1986. Rupert Brett is eager to make his mark. But even though he’s newly qualified to tackle jobs within the cutthroat property brokering industry, his ambitions are blunted when he must face off against ruthless competitors. And with his career on the line, he finds himself adrift in the murky waters of insider trading where knowledge is the real currency.

Clinging to his ideals but beginning to realize how deep the corruption goes, Rupert’s unprepared when a group of hard-nosed developers frame him for murder. With few friends and the law on his tail, his only way out may be a bargain with the devil.

Can the young surveyor thwart his enemies’ plans in time to save his reputation and his life?

A Deadly Deal is the immersive first book in the Deal Series of historical crime thrillers. If you like conflicted characters, rich period details, and complex plotting, then you’ll love Simon Fairfax’s gritty page-turner.

#Book Review #Let Her Lie by Bryan Reardon #Thriller @Crooked Lane Books

Synopsis:

A dejected filmmaker lets his curiosity get the best of him and plunges into a web of depravity and danger from which there might be no escape.

Theo Snyder is at the end of his rope. One minute he was on top of the world, his documentary film The Basement a massive critical and commercial hit, the next crestfallen when his latest film was canceled after an embarrassingly public misstep. As his desperation grows, he makes a bold decision: to pursue the story of the notorious “Halo Killer,” Jasper Ross-Johnson. But delving into the life and mind of a serial killer could prove more deadly than Theo ever could have imagined.

At first, things are looking up. Jasper is willing to talk, the footage of the jailhouse meetings is spectacular, and famed investigator Zora Neale Monroe joins him on the project. Theo is sure he’s getting close to something no one else has discovered: the truth about why Jasper was captured before he could kill his final victim. Someone else was on the beach that day, someone who knows a lot more than they’re telling and just might know how it all happened. The truth could lead to more killing–unless Theo can uncover the real ending to the story of the Halo Killer first.

My thoughts:

This was a surprisingly addictive thriller with my favourite kind of narrator- yes, the unreliable one- who managed to confuse me to the point of not being able to predict what was going to happen next page, chapter or at the end of the book. Theo Snyder took me on a wild ride and I mostly enjoyed it.

So, what was the book about? Theo Snyder, a documentary filmmaker who had his five minutes of fame and even became a household name when his documentary was on Netflix. He was LA’s golden boy and it seemed he couldn’t have put his foot down wrong. He did, although we don’t find out straightaway what happened. When we meet Theo at the beginning of the book, he is on a hunt for his next project and it might be his last chance to salvage whatever remains of his once illustrous carreer. When a convicted serial killer contacts him and asks to tell his story, Theo isn’t sure at first. The topic isn’t new, so unless Theo comes up with a new fascinating angle, nobody’s going to be interested. If Theo is good at anything, it is getting stories out of people, andhis gut instinct is telling him he just needs to dig deeper and discover not what Jasper Ross-Johnson did or why he did it, but what stopped him in the end, what was his undoing, his cryptonite. With the support of one of his rich and well-connected producer friends, Theo hires the best investigator in LA, Zora Monroe, and off he goes in search of the perfect story with the perfect ending. He discovers (or he thinks he discovers) the events are connected to a new-born baby girl being abandoned in an outhouse on the beach where coincidentally one of Jasper’s victims was found. The baby was adopted and given name of Miracle Jones.

It becomes very clear that Theo isn’t just passionate about his work, he is obsessed, even driven. His exhaustion and sleep deprivation mean he begins to lose bits of his own narrative, however hard he tries to put it all together into a coherent whole. The pace and rhythm of the book make you feel as if you are watching and trying to make sense of unedited film footage. Theo isn’t exactly blessed with excessive modesty, so he even thinks a fellow filmmaker has started making a documentary on him. If you like unreliable narrators and trying to piece together what is real and what is ‘fed in’ and who is playing who at any point of this thriller, Let Her Lie might be a book for you.

This isn’t a character-driven story, despite Theo looming large and overshadowing everybody else. The character who potentially could develop the most is Miracle, but we do not interact much with her, we see her through the lens of other people’s anecdotes or opinions, and we never feel we finally see what ‘really’ happened. Past is always remembered and re-created in a subjective way, which is easier to accept when we are talking about fiction, but is nevertheless true for all films and books, whether the writer had a lot of information to work with or had to rely on ‘the internal logic of events’.

The ending delivered a few final twists and it was almost too much for me. I felt like poor Theo who kept seeng clues which needed to be interpreted and re-interpreted time after time. But the last page was kind of satisfying and brought it all in focus once again.

Overal, I did enjoy this fast-paced, twisty story with its pervasive subtle irony. This is a story that never takes itself seriously and doesn’t work too hard to make you like its characters. Of course, this is just my subjective take!

Thank you to Edelweiss and Crooked Lane Books for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

  • How do you feel about unreliable narrators? Are there any books with them that you particularly liked and would recommend?
  • Is it important for a book to have likeable characters?

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted  by Tressa at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

The book I can’t wait for this Wednesday is …

Blade of Secrets by Tricia Levenseller.

Description:

In the first book in Tricia Levenseller’s exciting new YA fantasy duology, a teenage blacksmith with social anxiety is forced to go on the run to protect the world from the most powerful magical sword she’s ever made.

Then Ziva receives a commission from a powerful warlord, and the result is a sword capable of stealing its victims’ secrets. A sword that can cut far deeper than the length of its blade. A sword with the strength to topple kingdoms. When Ziva learns of the warlord’s intentions to use the weapon to enslave all the world under her rule, she takes her sister and flees.

Why do I want to read it?

Just the fact that the protagonist is a female teenage blacksmith with social anxiety would be enough, but I also know that Tricia’s stories are always full of adventure, intrigue and romance. They are addictive and impossible to put down. I know there’s going to be powerful magic with its own set of rules and moral dilemmas, fascinating characters, sisterly love and devotion and lots of fast-paced action.

Are you ready for this beautiful cover?

It’s Monday! What are you reading? February 8th, 2021

It’s Monday! What are you Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn from Book Date, a place to share and discuss what we’ve read in the past week and what we’re in the middle of or are planning to read this week.

All sections in blue are from the book blurbs on Goodreads.

What I read last week

Last weekI participated in two blog tours for the authors I already know and like.

Faking It by Portia MacIntosh

What Now? by Shari Low

The perfect house, the perfect husband and the perfect life… or is she just faking it?

Life has been a bit of a rollercoaster for Ella. Growing up as the ‘less successful’ identical twin to her ‘perfectly successful’ sister, Emma, has left her feeling isolated, inadequate and let’s face it.. a little bitter.

When Emma unexpectedly reaches out to Ella in a time of need, Ella suddenly finds herself with the opportunity to fill in for her sister and experience how the other half live.

The hilarious sequel to the bestselling What If?

Twenty years ago, Carly Cooper went on an epic quest to track down all the men she’d ever loved and lost in the hope that one of them was her Mr Right. Now, two decades and two teenage sons later, she thinks she might have got it all wrong. As the years have passed, lots of things have changed, leaving Carly asking ‘What Now?’

Both books were fun, full of banter and focused a lot on family dynamics. Then my long-neglected tbr called to me and I picked a sweet romance by Whitney Dineen.

Ain’t She Sweet by Whitney Dineen

Tara Heinz began her modeling career at the tender age of twelve. After spending fifteen years drooling over forbidden foods, she does the unthinkable. She enrolls in culinary school and becomes a pastry chef.

After a nasty breakup with her rock star boyfriend that leads to tabloid war, Tara takes a job at a rural lodge in Oregon to escape the spotlight she no longer desires.

James Cavanaugh is a farmer in Oregon. His days are spent building his business and his nights are spent sleeping, so he can get up at four in the morning.

Ruby Cavanaugh has plans for her son that involve her new pastry chef. Of course, neither James nor Tara know what’s going on until it’s too late.

After all this abundance of women’s fiction I really needed a psychological thriller.

What I am reading now:

The Unwilling by John Hart

Set in the South at the height of the Vietnam War, The Unwilling combines crime, suspense and searing glimpses into the human mind and soul in New York Times bestselling author John Hart’s singular style.

I am still in the middle of reading the book, but in the meantime, if you would like to see what other bloggers thought of this gritty, action-packed story I can recommend visiting Carla Loves To Read and checking out her wonderful review .

Super Host by Kate Russo

Warm, witty, and utterly humane, Super Host offers a captivating portrait of middle age, relationships, and what it truly means to take a new chance at life.

What I’m reading next:

Hunted by The Sky by Tanaz Bhatena

Gul has spent her life running. She has a star-shaped birthmark on her arm, and in the kingdom of Ambar, girls with such birthmarks have been disappearing for years. Gul’s mark is what caused her parents’ murder at the hand of King Lohar’s ruthless soldiers and forced her into hiding to protect her own life. So when a group of rebel women called the Sisters of the Golden Lotus rescue her, take her in, and train her in warrior magic, Gul wants only one thing: revenge.

Hurricane Summer by Asha Bromfield

In this sweeping debut, actress Asha Bromfield takes readers to the heart of Jamaica, and into the soul of a girl coming to terms with her family, and herself, set against the backdrop of a hurricane.

How did your last week go and what are you reading this week?

My thoughts:

A couple of months ago I reviewed What if? which was the first book Shari wrote. Set in late 80s and 90s, it was an unforgettabe story of looking for second chances and true love, families and friendships, throwing all the caution to the wind and trying to find Mr Right, because yes, every gilr deserves finding one. If you haven’t read the first book, stop reading this review immediately and pick the book!

In What Now? we are back into Carly Cooper’s world. Twenty years later. And well, not everything has worked out for our fun-loving heroine. She has two fabulous teenage sons and sometimes wonders how lucky she is to have them. She still has her family of choice: her loyal friends, their partners and their offspring (yes, the parties these ones throw are as noisy and full of joy as you can imagine). On the minus side, her marriage is on the rocks. Her soon to be ex-husband (not naming him on the off chance you still haven’t read the previous book) and Carly still respect each other and will always be there for their kids, but it turns out that too much work and not enough time dedicated to your family isn’t a recipe for a marital bliss.
Carly’s friends and her one of a kind aunt Val tell her Carly has changed. She has lost her spark and spontaneity. Yes, life in general and having kids makes us grow up and start weighing all the pros and cons before making a decision. But overthinking things doesn’t mean the course of action we take is going to be the right one, or the only right one. Carly Cooper is off on a journey again!

Shari Low knows how to create interesting characters. Even if it’s a secondary one and we get just a glimpse of their life, it is still fascinating. Carly is blessed with a large group of friends, so the cast is quite large, but they are all diverse and unique, and complement each other to create a most colourful patchwork of life. One of her original friends has passed away and we feel how she is mourned and remembered every day.

The age group Carly and her friends belong to -late forties-early fifties- is one of the most uderrepresented ones. It is as if once you settled down and had kids, you are just supposed to get on with your routine and keep quiet. You can’t even complain about your changing body and raging perimenopausal hormones or feel you betrayed your true identity by not pursuing your dreams. What about your relationship with your own aging parents? Don’t even start me on thinking that things were a whole lot simpler before your kids became teenagers.

What Now? is a great sequel to Shari’s first book. Perhaps, a bit more realistic, but still as entertaining. In case, you are wondering, there is a happily ever after, but it isn’t just the destination that counts, it’s the journey!

Thank you to Rachel, NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the review copy. All opinions aremy own and were not influenced in any way.
