The Gingerbread House that Wasn’t

In White Wedding, the heroine, Victoria Blackwood, is stuck coordinating her ex-fiancé’s Christmas-themed wedding. To make matters worse, her ex is marrying a demanding bridezilla. In one scene, she insists Victoria create four custom-made gingerbread houses to serve as table decorations at the wedding. Victoria is notably hesitant because her only experience with making a gingerbread house did not go well. As her mother recalls, “You lost your temper and smashed the house with a kitchen mallet. Then you and your brother ate all the candy.”

This scene was inspired by my own experience with a difficult gingerbread house. Back when my kids were little, by the time December rolled around, they always asked me if they could make a gingerbread house. And by “make,” I mean they wanted to stick the candy on the finished house. The actual construction of the house was supposed to be my job. Usually, I set up the gingerbread house the night before, so they could decorate it the next day, once the frosting had set. But one year I made the mistake of putting it together while they were waiting.

As they grew antsy and pressured me to finish it, I rushed to set the roof in place, only to cause the whole structure to collapse. I applied more frosting, propped up the walls with a couple of soup cans, waited fifteen agonizing minutes, and then tried the roof again. Another collapse. By the third time, they were growing ornery, and I was growing frustrated.

The house appeared to be set, but as soon as my son started applying the gumdrops, it collapsed again. Without thinking, I grabbed it and flung it against the wall, whereupon it broke into dozens of pieces. My poor kids stared at me in complete horror. Normally, I am not a violent person—I hardly ever raise my voice and I’m not prone to physical acts of anger. But that gingerbread house sent me over the edge.

Unfortunately, in our small town, news travels quickly. My kids told their friends, who told their mothers, and the story became legend. Most people found it hard to believe, since I’m so soft-spoken, but I didn’t deny it. Though the incident took place at least fifteen years ago, people still remember it. Every now and then, someone will bring it up and ask me to recount the story. By now, I can laugh at it—so much that I decided to use it as inspiration for my novel!

White Wedding

Take one lavish holiday wedding. Add one evil ex and his bridezilla. And toss in a smoking-hot chef from the past. It’s a recipe for disaster.

Victoria Blackwood has spent years trying to redeem herself after falling victim to a blackmail scheme that cost her father thousands. So, when he insists she coordinate a big Christmas wedding at her family’s winery, she can’t say no. Even if the groom is her ex, and the caterer just quit.

For Rafael Sanchez, a last-minute call to cater a huge society wedding is a golden opportunity. If he can prove he’s up to the challenge, his brothers might entrust him with more responsibility in the family catering business. But when he meets Victoria, he can’t believe his eyes. Five years ago, they had a passionate fling that rocked his world. Until she left him with only a fake name to remember her by.

To pull off the perfect wedding, Victoria and Rafael can’t afford to get caught up in the past. But keeping things professional won’t be easy, not when the attraction between them burns hotter than Christmas in July.

#Can’t Wait Wednesday # The Lost Dreamer by Lizz Huerta @FSG

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted at Wishful Endings, to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about that we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous Jill at Breaking the Spine. If you’re continuing with WOW, feel free to link those up as well! Find out more here.

And the book I am waiting for is…

From the blurb:

In this stunning YA fantasy debut, first in a duology, Lizz Huerta introduces us to a fantastical version of an ancient Mesoamerican world and a lineage of women seers defiantly resisting the shifting patriarchal state that would see them destroyed.

Indir is a Dreamer, able to enter the Dreaming and see beyond reality. But when a new king takes the throne, he plans to end the time-honored tradition of Dreamers—and he’ll have the opportunity if he discovers the two secrets Indir keeps.

Saya is a seer without training. Her mother exploits Saya’s talent, passing it off as her own. When Saya discovers she has more gifts, she begins to suspect that her life is a carefully-constructed lie. She will risk it all in search of answers.

With a detailed, supernaturally-charged setting and topical themes of patriarchal power, female strength, and the horrors of family separation, The Lost Dreamer brings an ancient world to life, mirroring the challenges of our modern one.

#Sci Fi Month #Happy Publication Day #Noor by Nnedi Okarafor @DAW

With November being the Sci Fi month, I just couldn’t resist highlighting Nnedi Okarofor’s new science fiction novel Noor. Happy Publication Day!

Description:

From Africanfuturist luminary Okorafor comes a new science fiction novel of intense action and thoughtful rumination on biotechnology, destiny, and humanity in a near-future Nigeria.

Anwuli Okwudili prefers to be called AO. To her, these initials have always stood for Artificial Organism. AO has never really felt…natural, and that’s putting it lightly. Her parents spent most of the days before she was born praying for her peaceful passing because even in-utero she was “wrong”. But she lived. Then came the car accident years later that disabled her even further. Yet instead of viewing her strange body the way the world views it, as freakish, unnatural, even the work of the devil, AO embraces all that she is: A woman with a ton of major and necessary body augmentations. And then one day she goes to her local market and everything goes wrong.

Once on the run, she meets a Fulani herdsman named DNA and the race against time across the deserts of Northern Nigeria begins. In a world where all things are streamed, everyone is watching the “reckoning of the murderess and the terrorist” and the “saga of the wicked woman and mad man” unfold. This fast-paced, relentless journey of tribe, destiny, body, and the wonderland of technology revels in the fact that the future sometimes isn’t so predictable. Expect the unaccepted.

But she’s starting to push back against the sheltered life Cooper has created for her—and he’s still haunted by the painful truth of what it took to get them there.

The only people who know they exist are a mysterious local hermit named Scotland, and Cooper’s old friend, Jake, who visits each winter to bring them food and supplies. Suddenly, the boundaries of their safe haven have blurred—and when a stranger wanders into their woods, Finch’s growing obsession with her could put them all in danger. #Happy Publication Day #Our Violent Ends by Chloe Gong #YA Fantasy @ Margaret K. McElderry Books

Happy Publication day to Our Violent Ends, the much-awaited sequel to These Violent Delights by Chloe Gong.

Publisher’s Description:

Shanghai is under siege in this captivating and searingly romantic sequel to These Violent Delights, which New York Times bestselling author Natasha Ngan calls “deliciously dark.”

The year is 1927, and Shanghai teeters on the edge of revolution.

After sacrificing her relationship with Roma to protect him from the blood feud, Juliette has been a girl on a mission. One wrong move, and her cousin will step in to usurp her place as the Scarlet Gang’s heir. The only way to save the boy she loves from the wrath of the Scarlets is to have him want her dead for murdering his best friend in cold blood. If Juliette were actually guilty of the crime Roma believes she committed, his rejection might sting less.

Roma is still reeling from Marshall’s death, and his cousin Benedikt will barely speak to him. Roma knows it’s his fault for letting the ruthless Juliette back into his life, and he’s determined to set things right—even if that means killing the girl he hates and loves with equal measure.

Then a new monstrous danger emerges in the city, and though secrets keep them apart, Juliette must secure Roma’s cooperation if they are to end this threat once and for all. Shanghai is already at a boiling point: The Nationalists are marching in, whispers of civil war brew louder every day, and gangster rule faces complete annihilation. Roma and Juliette must put aside their differences to combat monsters and politics, but they aren’t prepared for the biggest threat of all: protecting their hearts from each other.

It’s Monday! What are you reading? November 11th, 2021

It’s Monday! What are you Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn from Book Date, a place to share and discuss what we’ve read in the past week and what we’re in the middle of or are planning to read this week.

What I read last week/still reading now:

Last week my family and I were sick, so the only book I read was Crazy Rich Asians by Kewin Kwan, which is a buddy read with Yesha. I’m two thirds into this unbelievably addictive comedy of manners, snobbery and kooky families.

Crazy Rich Asians is the outrageously funny debut novel about three super-rich, pedigreed Chinese families and the gossip, backbiting, and scheming that occurs when the heir to one of the most massive fortunes in Asia brings home his ABC (American-born Chinese) girlfriend to the wedding of the season.

What I’m reading /listening to next:

The Unhoneymooners by Christina Lauren– I’ve been on a waiting list in my libray for this one for ages, so I just have to do it this week. The enemies-to-lovers is one of my favourite tropes. Still, it will be hard to trump the sheer insanity of Crazy Rich Asians….

Olive is always unlucky: in her career, in love, in…well, everything. Her identical twin sister Ami, on the other hand, is probably the luckiest person in the world. Her meet-cute with her fiancé is something out of a romantic comedy (gag) and she’s managed to finance her entire wedding by winning a series of Internet contests (double gag). Worst of all, she’s forcing Olive to spend the day with her sworn enemy, Ethan, who just happens to be the best man.

Olive braces herself to get through 24 hours of wedding hell before she can return to her comfortable, unlucky life. But when the entire wedding party gets food poisoning from eating bad shellfish, the only people who aren’t affected are Olive and Ethan. And now there’s an all-expenses-paid honeymoon in Hawaii up for grabs.

Putting their mutual hatred aside for the sake of a free vacation, Olive and Ethan head for paradise, determined to avoid each other at all costs. But when Olive runs into her future boss, the little white lie she tells him is suddenly at risk to become a whole lot bigger. She and Ethan now have to pretend to be loving newlyweds, and her luck seems worse than ever. But the weird thing is that she doesn’t mind playing pretend. In fact, she feels kind of… lucky
