Today I’m delighted to participate in the blog tour for Grenade  Bouquets by  Lee Matthew Goldberg, the second book in his Runaway Train series.

Book details:
Grenade Bouquets
by Lee Matthew Goldberg
(Runaway Train, #2)
Publication date: August 5th 2021
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult
Synopsis:

I had stars in my eyes and I couldn’t see around them…

The year is 1995 and my parents have finally allowed me to take the summer to tour in a VW van across the country with my boyfriend Evan and our band. Yes, my dream to be a singer became reality. Even with Clarissa, Evan’s jealous ex-girlfriend, as the lead singer, it’s my presence on stage that led us to a major record deal. There are moments you’ll always remember in life, but I can’t imagine anything more cool than hearing your song on the radio for the first time.

But being a Rockstar isn’t as easy as it sounds. Using alcohol and drugs as coping mechanisms, nothing but tension surrounded me, hurting my still blossoming relationship, and continued grieving over my sister’s death.

A love letter to the nineties and a journey of a girl becoming a woman, Grenade Bouquets charts the rollercoaster ride of a band primed to explode on the scene, as long as they keep from actually exploding.

“An engaging ’90s pastiche with an earnest heart beating at its center.”– Kirkus Reviews on Runaway Train.

Genetic – Sonic Youth

When I get home, Mom is on the couch with one of those huge mugs that could be used for soup or tea. She’s got the AC blasting and wearing a sweater with wool scrunchie socks like a loon. I’m surprised not to see Mr. Ferguson, or rather, Roger, her new boyfriend. Most nights they sit on the couch together and watch old romantic films like Roman Holiday or Bringing Up Baby. Old movies bug me, the acting seems so forced and fake, and everything is so overdramatic. I’d rather watch Heathers for the nineteen-thousandth time. Mom and Roger have a pretty sweet setup. Roger literally lives next door with only a fence separating them, so they haven’t moved in together yet. They decided to ix-nay the idea of putting an extension between their houses. Something I’m not ready for either, since Roger has two chow-chows that take giant log-like shits that would make even the Log Lady from Twin Peaks proud.

“Nico,” Mom says, as she waves me over. She removes a knitted blanket from the seat next to her and pats for me to sit. I curl up and see she’s watching My So-Called Life.

“Aren’t you a little old for that show?” I ask, as I watch Angela make moon eyes for Jordan Catalano.

“I was once in high school too, ya-know,” she says, and her eyes glaze over. I imagine she’s remembering times from the olden days. “Although it was so different than what you kids are dealing with now. Alcoholism, school violence, AIDS…”

I have a realization that my high-school life has basically been My So-Called Life and not 90210. I’m Angela, Winter’s wild Rayanne, and Jeremy is flamboyant Rickie. Although there’d never been a boy like Jordan Catalano in the halls who looked my way.

Mom wraps an errant hair around my ear and fingers my faux diamond stud. “How was Winter’s?”

I must’ve made a harumph sound because she gets this concerned dent between her eyes.

“I dunno…” I try to form what I want to say. “Winter can be such a bitch.”

Mom mutes the TV as Claire Danes with her crimson hair flails around in her oversized flannel at a backyard party before she gets shoved in the mud.

“It’s probably hard for her to watch you go.”

“I’m only like going for a few weeks.”

“Sweetie, you two aren’t glued at the hip anymore, it’s natural.”

I pick up her big mug and take a sip. It’s ginger tea. “Really?”

“Not everyone gets a best friend in high school like you both had. But you can’t stay best friends forever, it’s not possible. There’ll be college and jobs and husbands and many new friends. I haven’t talked to my best friend Lucille in ages.”

“Isn’t she the one who sells hair?”

“It’s for a non-profit charity, but yes, she does sell hair for wigs. That’s my point. We’re so different. She never had children…” Mom pauses at the word ‘children’ and then recalibrates, her hardwire telling her she only has one child now. A sigh like a fog over a moor escapes from her lips. “We grew apart. Like what’s happening with Angela and Rayanne,” she continues, nodding at the TV. “And with you and Winter.”

“She has this godawful new friend Emily, who’s like the worst. And I think they…” I struggle to say they might be doing cocaine. Mom might think she’s all cool with her My So-Called Life knowledge, but cocaine would be too big a leap. “She’s a bad influence.”

Mom pulls me close. We used to do this when I was little, snuggle up and eat a bowl of Teddy Grahams or something. But then I became a demon around the age of eleven and shut myself up in my room blaring Nirvana whenever I was home.

#Can’t Wait Wednesday #Within These Wicked Walls by Lauren Blackwood @Wednesday Books

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted  by Tressa at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about which we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

The book I’m waiting for this Wednesday is…

Within These Wicked Walls by Lauren Blackwood

Kiersten White meets Tomi Adeyemi in this Ethiopian-inspired fantasy retelling of Jane Eyre

Andromeda is a debtera—an exorcist hired to cleanse households of the Evil Eye. She would be hired, that is, if her mentor hadn’t thrown her out before she could earn her license. Now her only hope of steady work is to find a Patron—a rich, well-connected individual who will vouch for her abilities.

When a handsome young heir named Magnus Rochester reaches out to hire her, she takes the job without question. Never mind that he’s rude and demanding and eccentric, that the contract comes with a number of outlandish rules… and that almost a dozen debtera had quit before her. If Andromeda wants to earn a living, she has no choice.

But she quickly realizes this is a job like no other, with horrifying manifestations at every turn, and that Magnus is hiding far more than she has been trained for. Death is the most likely outcome if she stays, the reason every debtera before her quit. But leaving Magnus to live out his curse alone isn’t an option because—heaven help her—she’s fallen for him.

Stunningly romantic, Lauren Blackwood’s heartstopping debut, Within These Wicked Walls, ushers in an exciting new fantasy voice.

Publisher:Wednesday Books

Expected Publication date: October 19, 2021

Genre: Young Adult Fiction / Fantasy / Historical

Age category: 14 to 18

#Guest post by Laura Briggs #Publication Push #Cornish Gold at Summer’s End by aura Briggs @rararesources

Today I’m delighted to participate in the blog tour for Cornish Gold at Summer’s End and present a guest post by its wonderful author Laura Briggs!

Guest Post by Laura Briggs

Scaring Up a Cornish Halloween Read

So happy to be sharing with everyone at Reading Tonic about my new book Cornish Gold at Summer’s End. The fourth book in my new series, it continues the adventures of event planner Julianne Rose and her handsome Poldark-esque husband Matt.

A quick glance at its cover tells you it’s a fun, feel-good autumn read. It’s also got a bit of Halloween mischief going on, including rumors of ghosts, mysterious lights, and a supposedly haunted cottage in the village woods.

I do love a good creepy atmosphere in a story…as long as it doesn’t get too frightening. In fact, the cheesier the better when it comes to favorite tropes like haunted old mansions and hotels, or crumbling castles—usually with a quirky staff and guests who get mysteriously picked off one by. And don’t forget sinister veiled women in black popping up when you least expect them!

Blame it on my childhood love for movies like The Ghost and Mr. Chicken, Private Eyes, and Arsenic and Old Lace, but I prefer my horror on the lighter side, with a few jump scares to keep you guessing.

So if you’re like me and find yourself hiding under the covers after a truly ghoulish horror movie, fear not: Julianne’s Cornish Halloween is far more on the cozy than creepy side. Though you may get a little chill as her search leads her to some less savory parts of village life, proving that even in quiet Ceffylgwyn things aren’t perfect. But there’s plenty of humor to lighten the mood, with paranormal obsessed tourists flocking to the haunted historic walks, and the village’s answer to Ghost Hunters lending Julianne a hand in her quest for the truth.

It’s the perfect read for a night by the fire, maybe with a warm mug of cider or pumpkin spiced cookie on hand. If you think it sounds right up your street, I hope you’ll give it a glance before Halloween arrives. Books one through four are available now, with Julianne’s Christmas adventure, Walnut Mince Pies at the Frost Fete, already on pre-order.

About the book:

Cornish Gold at Summer’s End

Rumors of a ghostly presence haunt Julianne’s Cornish autumn in the series’ charming fourth installment.

What began as a bit of teenage mischief in the village quickly became stories of spooky lights and ghost sightings in the wood. Being sensible, Julianne is more worried about whether she can finish her kids’ costumes in time for the annual Halloween contest—and whether husband Matt and his eager assistants will be selected for the exclusive Brookshire Garden Design Competition. So when everyone in town begins flocking to the local ‘ghost walk’ tours Julianne assures her wide-eyed children it’s just a case of imagination run wild…until she experiences her own brush with the supernatural, that is.

Real or imagined, Julianne can’t shrug off what she saw, or even bring herself to confide in sympathetic Matt for advice. Best friend Kitty is on hand to help, despite her usual family battles, including that of her cousins’ shady new scheme to profit from the town’s ghost mania. But even Julianne’s friends can’t fully understand her need to find a solution this time, one that leads her on a quirky quest from local lore, to meetings with the village’s ragtag paranormal club, and even a creepy abandoned cottage hiding secrets in the woods.

Join Julianne for suspense, surprises, and (of course) heartfelt moments as book four in the series brings an autumn like no other to sleepy Ceffylgwyn.

#Book review #The Dating Dare (A Sweet Mess Book 2) by Jayci Lee #20 Books of Summer 21

Book Description:

Jayci Lee, author of A Sweet Mess, returns with The Dating Dare—her next witty, chemistry-filled romantic comedy.

Tara Park doesn’t do serious relationships. Neither does she hop into bed with virtual strangers. Especially when that particular stranger is her best friend’s new brother-in-law. It isn’t an easy decision, though. Seth Kim is temptation personified. His unreasonably handsome looks and charming personality makes him easy on the eyes and good for her ego.

When a friendly game of Truth or Dare leads to an uncomplicated four-date arrangement with Seth, Tara can’t say she minds. But their dates, while sweet and sexy, have a tendency to hit roadblocks. Thankfully, their non-dates and chance meetings get frequent and heated.

Seth is leaving for a new job in Paris in a month and a no-strings attached fling seemed like a nice little distraction for both… But soon Seth realizes that Tara Park doesn’t come in a “nice & little” package–she’s funny and bold, sweet and sexy, and everything he ever wanted and never expected to find. Neither of them are ready for something serious and both have past relationship baggage they’ve been ignoring, but with a shot at forever on the line will they follow their hearts and take a chance on happily-ever-after?

My thoughts:

Last year I read Jayci Lee’s A Sweet Mess, a charming story of a match made in heaven- a baker and a food critic. The food descriptions were so mouth-wateringly good that I immediately became Jayce Lee’s fan and couldn’t wait for her new book, The Dating Dare. And it didn’t disappoint!

The plot is fairly straightforward- Aubrey’s best friend Tara whom we met in the previous book loves her job in her family brewery, loves her home town Weldon and her supportive family. Tara is a independent, funny, loyal…but she isn’t exactly in a hurry to settle down. Aubrey’s brand-new brother-in-law, Landon’s younger brother Seth is moving to Paris to start his dream job of a fashion photographer in a month. So, when Seth comes up with a dare to go on four dates with the condition of Not falling in love, the arrangement suits both to a T. Whatever happens in Weldon, stays in Weldon, right? well, Tara doesn’t like to keep her personal life and her ‘real life’ separate, so they try to keep the dates (and non-dates) secret.

Yes, you can probably guess (in broad terms) what is going to happen, but here the magic is in the execution, and I have to say I liked this book even more that the first one. First of all, the attraction between these two is really strong- the scene with the desserts in the park- hot, hot, hot… In case you were wondering, Jayci Lee is a master of fade-to-black at the right moment, so if you choose to listen to The Dating Dare instead of reading, you don’t need to worry about desperately trying to skip some tracks.
Secondly, there’s so much romance! I’m dying to tell you about the dates, and all the cute, sappy things these two get to do. Thirdly, there’s a lot of emphasis on treating each other with respect and consideration in everything- dreams, feelings, choices (big and small).

Tara is one of those rare case where I liked the protagonist, but didn’t exactly relate to her. She has her reasons for avoiding any serious commitments and, although we don’t get many details of her past, I admire her for recognising and dealingwith it. Seth also has his own emotional baggage he needs leave behind before he can truly fall in love. The ending is sweet, melodramatic and satisfying (we all knew how it was going to end!).

Once again, I loved the food descriptions. There were fewer of them- understandably, with Tara and Seth’s jobs being different from Aubrey and Landon’s- but they were absolutely delicious.

Sweet and fun, The Dating Dare was exactly what I needed on a hot summer day like this!

Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin’s Griffin for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

It’s Monday! What are you reading? August 2nd, 2021

It’s Monday! What are you Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn from Book Date, a place to share and discuss what we’ve read in the past week and what we’re in the middle of or are planning to read this week.

What I read / listened to last week

A Cowboy’s Homecoming by Leigh Riker

Noah Bodine is paying the price for missing his sister’s wedding by temporarily running his family’s Kansas ranch. But the corporate cowboy is way out of his element. Thankfully, neighbor Kate Lancaster is there to help, though the pretty single mom isn’t pleased to spend time with Noah. She still blames Noah for her husband’s death. That is, until Kate’s little boy decides to make Noah his new best friend…and changes both Kate’s and Noah’s meaning of home.

What I am reading/listening to now:

Still listening to

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell (audiobook)

What can I say? I’m a slow listener, although the book is very good.|

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

The can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

…Finally, finishing the series!

Ruin and Rising by Leigh Bardugo

The capital has fallen.

The Darkling rules Ravka from his shadow throne.

Now the nation’s fate rests with a broken Sun Summoner, a disgraced tracker, and the shattered remnants of a once-great magical army.

Deep in an ancient network of tunnels and caverns, a weakened Alina must submit to the dubious protection of the Apparat and the zealots who worship her as a Saint. Yet her plans lie elsewhere, with the hunt for the elusive firebird and the hope that an outlaw prince still survives.

Alina will have to forge new alliances and put aside old rivalries as she and Mal race to find the last of Morozova’s amplifiers. But as she begins to unravel the Darkling’s secrets, she reveals a past that will forever alter her understanding of the bond they share and the power she wields. The firebird is the one thing that stands between Ravka and destruction—and claiming it could cost Alina the very future she’s fighting for.

A Good Day For Chardonnay by Darynda Jones

Running a small-town police force in the mountains of New Mexico should be a smooth, carefree kind of job. Sadly, full-time Sheriff–and even fuller-time coffee guzzler–Sunshine Vicram, didn’t get that memo.

All Sunshine really wants is one easy-going day. You know, the kind that starts with coffee and a donut (or three) and ends with take-out pizza and a glass of chardonnay (or seven). Turns out, that’s about as easy as switching to decaf. (What kind of people do that? And who hurt them?)

Before she can say iced mocha latte, Sunny’s got a bar fight gone bad, a teenage daughter hunting a serial killer and, oh yes, the still unresolved mystery of her own abduction years prior. All evidence points to a local distiller, a dangerous bad boy named Levi Ravinder, but Sun knows he’s not the villain of her story. Still, perhaps beneath it all, he possesses the keys to her disappearance. At the very least, beneath it all, he possesses a serious set of abs. She’s seen it. Once. Accidentally.

Between policing a town her hunky chief deputy calls four cents short of a nickel, that pesky crush she has on Levi which seems to grow exponentially every day, and an irascible raccoon that just doesn’t know when to quit, Sunny’s life is about to rocket to a whole new level of crazy.

Yep, definitely a good day for chardonnay.

A Reaper at the Gates by SabaaTahir

Beyond the Martial Empire and within it, the threat of war looms ever larger.

Helene Aquilla, the Blood Shrike, is desperate to protect her sister’s life and the lives of everyone in the Empire. Yet danger lurks on all sides. Emperor Marcus, haunted by his past, grows increasingly unstable and violent, while Keris Veturia, the ruthless Commandant, capitalizes on the Emperor’s volatility to grow her own power—regardless of the carnage she leaves in her path.

Far to the east, Laia of Serra knows that the fate of the world lies not in the machinations of the Martial court, but in stopping the Nightbringer. During the hunt to bring him down, Laia faces unexpected threats from those she hoped would help her, and is drawn into a battle she never thought she’d have to fight.

And in the land between the living and the dead, Elias Veturius has given up his freedom to serve as Soul Catcher. However, in doing so, he has vowed himself to an ancient power that demands his complete surrender—even if that means abandoning the woman he loves.
