Talk about a walk of shame!
From enchanted castle to crumbling cottage, I’m now stuck in Morningwood, struggling to plot my next move.
This strange little town, full of mischief and magic, is the perfect place to hide while I practice my spells and hopefully regain my powers.
What could possibly go wrong?
Other than accidentally summoning a mysterious male vampire who throws me off my quest and gets my blood boiling in all the right places.
And my blood is exactly what Vail and his brotherhood need for their top-secret laboratory.
Who would have thought my charming royal genes could help their dangerous mission?
As long as Vail keeps his fangs to himself, we won’t have a problem.

THE WHERRYMAN
Four missing children, three murdered men, and the helm of a boat with a blood-red sail, hiding a secret only he can tell. Returning to the Broads after nearly two years at sea, Tanner moors up next to a boat to find the body of a man whose five-year-old daughter is nowhere to be seen. As a torrent of unwanted memories begins flooding through his mind, an attractive Broads Ranger arrives at the scene with a disturbing tale; one of children being taken by a ghostly figure, standing at the helm of an old wooden boat.
We are back to the fascinating world of Norfolk Broads with DI Tanner’s latest investigation!
After the tragic events of Horsey Mere, John Tanner did the only thing he could do to preserve his sanity- he went to the sea ( ‘The cure for anything is salt water—sweat, tears, or the sea’ Isak Dinesen). Two years later he is back to the place where he started his journey and bang! in the middle of a new case, as he discovers a dead body and finds out that the victim’s five-year-old daughter is missing. He also discovers that this isn’t an isolated case- three more children have been abducted from their parents’ boats. And Vicky Gilbert (who has become a DI in the meantime) delivers another disturbing piece of news: a criminal family from London has relocated to Norfolk. They say that the head of the family wanted to retire, but in reality, they get into a new business- that of hiring boats to holidaymakers. There’s another very sinister reason to suspect that they might be involved…
The book is as dark and gripping as the previous one. The ‘supernatural’ element (or you might want to call it ‘the superstition element) is the legend of a wherryboat with dark-red, blood-soaked sails and a lonely wherryman who whisks away children left without supervision. Of course, DI Tanner is a down-to-earth person, who believes in evidence collection and solid police work, but this much-feared ghostly apparition may have an unexpected rational explanation.
We see a different side of Tanner, a person who has endured a lot of suffering in his life and hasn’t lost his humanity and compassion. There are some old characters (I was very happy to see more of Vicky and DCI Forrester) and some new characters that you might take to or dislike intensely.
The setting is very atmospheric. I don’t know much about boats and sailing, but the descriptions sounded fascinating and I found myself looking for images online. David’s passion for Norfolk Broads and boats was clearly evident in this book.
Despite the very dark topic (the final scenes were downright shocking, even creepy), this was an entertaining read, I found impossible to put down. Can’t wait for the next book in the series- Storm Force.
Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources, the publisher and the author for the review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Tristan, the first book in a new action-packed, swoonworthy fantasy series by Jennie Lynn Roberts.
Book details: Tristan by Jennie Lynn Roberts (The Hawks, #1) Publication date: February 22nd 2021 Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Synopsis:
His redemption might be her downfall…
Tristan has nothing left to lose. His best friend’s betrayal cost him everything. Now, he’s going to take it back. All he has to do to get the Hawks reinstated to their rightful position at the palace is track down the traitor’s younger sister and turn her over for execution. But Nim’s not the girl Tristan left behind years ago; she’s a stubborn, loyal, beautiful woman, and he can’t stop himself from wanting her.
Nim fled with nothing when the king’s favorite came for her. All she has left is the conviction that her brother is innocent—and her determination to free him. She’ll do anything…even if it means convincing Tristan to help her. But the man he’s become is a far cry from the boy she fell in love with so long ago. He’s formidably stern and deeply untrusting. She’ll just have to hope he still has a heart under that battle-scarred exterior.
When love and duty collide, will Tristan follow his orders or follow his heart?
Tristan, book 1 in The Hawks series, is a sexy, steamy, adult fantasy romance full of swords, shifters (kind of), and tons of action. But fair warning: This book is intended only for readers who love slow burn romance, fast-paced adventure, soul mates and found family—and characters who curse when they fight for survival. If that’s you, happy reading.
Tristan by Jennie Lynn Roberts is a fabulously imaginative fantasy story set in an original world. If you are looking for a new series, full of adventures and well-rounded, interesting characters, Tristan is a book for you! Tristan is a Captain of Royal Guards entrusted with the protection of the King himself. At the beginning of the book a tragedy strikes and the King is assassinated with Tristan standing but a few feet away. Added to Tristan’s shame and guilt is the fact that his childhood friend, a royal guard himself, Val, appears to have betrayed the King and his fellow soldiers and got involved with the treacherous Princess Alana, who has recently joined the royal family in order to secure peace. Tristan and his faithful Hawks are demoted and exiled, while Val is captured and is awaiting execution. When Tristan is given one chance to redeem himself by tracking Val’s accomplice, he doesn’t hesitateeven if the person in question is Val’s younger sister Nim, his companion of childhood games. Nim’s flight from the new King’s vengeful Chancellor is heart-breaking. Once she find out that Val is still alive, she becomes a woman on mission: she must save her kind and loyal brother or die trying to do it.
The world created by Jennie Lynn Roberts is spellbinding. It has been such a long time since I visited afantasy world so carefully constructed. It is quite complex, but the author doesn’t fallinto the trap of an infodump. She doesn’t tell, she shows and involves her readersin the adventures of her fascinating characters. I really enjoyed getting to know the protagonists and, yes, I will always have a sweet spot for a strong, reserved male lead and an equally strong, but so feisty female protagonist. The secondary characters are equally interesting and it was so much fun getting to know the Hawks with their unique abilities and unique dispositions.
I adore slow-burn romance and friends-to-lovers trope and this one surpassed all my expectations! There was enough time and enough adventures for the characters to test their ideas of what they already believed in their hearts- that they belong together and that the trust they placed blindly in the nobility of each other’s intentions was justified.
I am really looking forward to the second part of the Hawks and cannot recommend it highly enough to all lovers of the fantasy genre.
Jennie Lynn Roberts believes that every strong, kickass heroine should have control of her own story, a swoony hero to support her at every turn, and a guaranteed happily ever after. Because that doesn’t always happen in real life, she began creating her own worlds that work just the way they should. And she hasn’t looked back since.
Jennie would rather be writing than doing anything else—except for spending time with her gorgeous family, of course. But when she isn’t building vibrant new worlds, she can be found nattering with friends, baking up a storm, or strolling in the woods around her home in England.
If you want to talk books, romance, movies, reluctant heroes, or just about anything else with Jennie, feel free to contact her atwww.jennielynnroberts.com. But be prepared to settle in for a long chat if you bring up shifters, vampires, Star Wars, or The Princess Bride….

HORSEY MERE The remains of a 17th Century witch, an MP found hanging above a five-pointed star, and three girls with powers beyond anyone’s control. As DI Tanner and DS Evans endeavour to make plans for their big day, the chance discovery of Norfolk’s last known witch, tried and hanged by Norfolk’s infamous Witchfinder General, sparks a chain of the most horrific events, none of which Tanner seems able to stop.

My Thoughts:
I am a newcomer to this fascinating series of police procedurals, but my blogger friends raved about David Blake’s previous books and now I can see why. Fast-paced, gritty, atmospheric, Horsey Mere is an excellent addition to DI Tanner series.
I must admit, when I first read the short blurb provided by the publisher, I imagined the book in a different light. So, if you are not a big fan of paranormal, rest assured, however atmospheric the beginning of the story is (three boys open an old grave with human remains), it is followed by a solid police investigation into a different case. I don’t really want to give the story away, but the plot is well-thought through in the best way possible. You have all the clues, but you discover their significance together with the police, when you begin to see connections between the things which previously appeared unrelated. I like a good twist as much as any other reader, but what I like more is a foreshadowed twist and David Blake is a real master of creating watertight plots.
Most of us read series like that because we find the detectives and their personal and working relationships, which are inevitably intertwined, fascinating. We get to see more of DI Tanner and his fiancee Jenny Evans. I dare say that seeing how well they understand each other, hearing their playful banter and knowing that they will always have each other’s back ( ‘until death do us part’) is one of the most tender moments of this otherwise down-to-earth book.
There are some really serious issues explored in this story- politics, racism, xenophobia, social climbing, blackmail with the overarching idea of action and reaction, force and counterforce, injustice/ suffering that is unfortunately exarcerbated by more injustice. These topics may sound too heavy, but the book is a real page-turner told at a perfect pace.
Fortunately, the next instalment is already out and I can’t wait to tell you all about it tomorrow in my new post on The Wherryman, DI Tanner#6.

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Girl with Secrets by Carol Rivers, a wartime saga set in London. Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for organising the tour and to Carol Rivers for her guest post!
GUEST POST BY CAROL RIVERS
Hello, I’m Carol Rivers and my new book is called Girl with Secrets
From the very start of this book, I wanted to pull you into the story and grab your emotions. Daisy Purbright is a nine-year-old country girl, (above right) who finds herself at the mercy of the Luftwaffe when her father relocates his business to the heart of London’s East End. I wanted to tell a story that was common to many children in wartime. Heartbreak and strength, love and loss, taking responsibility way before your time.
I found Daisy’s journey compelling as I wrote and researched. I knew it would be a captivating and enthralling historical saga because I was captivated. So much so, that I know I need to write the next book in order to see what happens to Daisy and her devoted family as they try to come to terms with all that war means. I hope, after reading Girl with Secrets, you will agree with me!
Much love as always, Carol x
Girl with Secrets A coming of age war story and family saga full of romance, mystery and danger in London’s East End. From the Sunday Times and ebook bestselling author of the Lizzie Flowers series and A Wartime Christmas comes a gripping NEW coming-of-age saga about love, loyalties and secrets.
IN THE TURMOIL OF WAR, CAN SHE KEEP HER FAMILY TOGETHER?
‘Surely one of the best saga writers of her time’ – Rosie Clarke
1938, East London. Nine year old Daisy Purbright is a country girl at heart and together with beloved brother Bobby, they’ve enjoyed the endless freedoms of rural England.
But when her father gambles the family’s fortunes on a speculative investment in London’s docklands, Daisy and her family are swept up into the intrigue, danger and excitement.Desperately the Purbrights attempt to settle to a new life in the East End, but the whisperings of war grow louder.
Then, one late afternoon in September 1940, Adolf Hitler conducts a paralysing bombardment on London and war tightens its grip. Life changes dramatically and closely guarded secrets threaten the Purbrights’ happiness.
Can Daisy and her family survive one of the most fateful events of the 20th century?
Perfect for fans of Nadine Dorries, Pam Howes, Rosie Clarke and Dilly Court.
Mum and Dad were both East Enders who were born on the famous or should I say the then infamous Isle of Dogs. Their family were immigrants who travelled to the UK from Ireland and France, while others emigrated to America. As a child I would listen to the adults spinning their colourful stories, as my cousins and I drank pop under the table. I know the seeds of all my stories come from those far off times that feel like only yesterday. So I would like to say a big heartfelt thank you to all my family and ancestors wherever you are now … UK, Ireland, France or America, as you’ve handed down to me the magic and love of story telling.
Thank you for reading the post! Let’s all wish Carol’s book lots of success!
Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for Kirsty Ferguson’s new book Who Do You Trust?

But then the worst fear that Dana has, comes true, and everything she thought she knew, she now starts to doubt. As her world comes crashing around her, who can Dana trust?

Her parents and her sister, who Dana knows are keeping a terrible secret from her? Matt, who says he’s Dana’s friend, but sometimes she’s not so sure? Or will Dana discover that it’s a dangerous mistake to trust anyone…
Join Kirsty Ferguson on this heart-stopping, plot-twisting, roller coaster read, perfect for fans of Shari Lapena and Adele Parks.
This isn’t going to be an easy review to write without spolilers. If you’ve read the book, you must have noticed how carefully the blurb was worded to avoid giving away the most important content point.
Kirsty Ferguson is well-known for her gripping domestic noirs and dark topics. The premise in her newest bok is intriguing: who can you trust after a tragedy strikes and you both desperately need your family support and feel they are at least partially responsible for it?
Dana O’Connor is expecting her second child. Her husband Logan, her four-year-old daughter Kelsey and she are invited to a barbeque at her parents house. Her mother would like Dana and her younger sister Alesha try to mend their relationship, practically broken for good after Alesha said some very hurtful things to Dana three months before. We begin to see that Dana’s life might not be as perfect as it seems at first glance. Then unimaginable tragedy happens and devastated Dana needs time and space to make sense of it and accept it. Twists keep coming right, left and center. First we find out what exactly was said three months before to ruin Dana and Alesha’s sisterly bond. Then new people, Melanie and Matt, appear in Dana’s life, while the old ties and friendships (her husband Logan and her best friend Pippa) seem to fade or transform. The circumstances in which Dana becomes friends with Melanie and later Matt are understandable, but she is the only one who doesn’t seem to see that it’s too much too soon for them to really have her best interests at heart. The final twist will reveal it all!
There is a fairly large cast of characters, but they all have strong links to Dana, who is in the centre of the narration. Dana, in her own words, likes to please people. On several occasions, despite feeling strongly about the issue at hand, she caves in, because it is easier to agree. There is a thin line between persuading somebody to do something and pushing them to do something they aren’t ready or willing to do. It is up to the reader to draw their own conclusions whether the people around Dana are lacking understanding of the emotional side of the situation (they are also, tosome extent, dealing with the aftermath of the tragedy), are selfish, unsupportive, or even abusive. Personally, I would have appreciated a bit more depth to the characterization, as the book felt too plot-driven.
Altogether, it was a quick read with a very dark cental theme and lots of unexpected twists. I am a fan of domestic thrillers (if you’ve been following this blog for some time, you know how much I love Shari Lapena) and would like to read another book by this author.
Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources, NetGalley and Boldwood Books for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.
If you are a kind of person who apprreciates content warnings / trigger warnings, please, highlight the following lines written in white:
Content warning:
Accidental death of a child caused by a parent. I am going to be absolutely honest and say that had I been given this content warning, I wouldn’t have picked the book ,as this is the topic I tend to avoid. I understand that not everybody likes having content warnings and this way you can miss out on lots of great books, so Itried to do my best to keep my review spoiler free.

Happy Book Birthday to ‘Dating the It Guy’ by Krysten Lindsay Hager. The author kindly agreed to answer my questions about her writing process and her book!
What is the book about:
Dating the It Guy
Emme starts dating a popular high school student who happens to be from a famous political family. It seems like everyone at school either wants to be Brendon Agretti or date him. Emme feels out of her comfort zone in Brendon’s world and it doesn’t help that his picture-perfect ex seems determined to get back into his life, along with every other girl who wants to be the future Mrs. Agretti.
Emme is already conflicted due to the fact her last boyfriend dumped her and her whole world is off kilter with her grandparents’ health issues. Life suddenly seems easier pushing Brendon away and relying on her crystals and horoscopes to guide her. Emme soon starts to realize she needs to focus less on the stars and more on her senses.
Can Emme get over her insecurities and make her relationship work? Life sure is complicated when you’re dating the it guy.
What is your favourite genre? Is there any genre you never read?
I love YA, middle grade, rom-coms, chick lit, mysteries, and non-fiction. I don’t really read sci-fi.
What formats do you prefer: paperbacks, e-books or audiobooks? Why?
If it’s fiction then I prefer an e-book, but sometimes I want non-fiction in paperback so I can make notes and put little bookmarks in to highlight parts.
What do you find most enjoyable about writing? Has the pandemic situation influenced your writing process?
I love escaping into another world. At the beginning of the pandemic, I was very creative, then not so much. I updated a few of my books that are already out to give myself something positive and creative to do. However, I did start working on a project after that.
What was your inspiration for Dating the It Guy?
I was watching a documentary on JFK Jr. and imagining what it’d be like to date the high school version of that and all of the doubt and insecurity that would fill you with.
What is your favourite secondary character from the book?
I love Brendon and I love showing his side of what it’s like to be in a famous family and have all that pressure on you. I’ve had a surprising amount of guys who read the book and said they liked the realistic portrayal of him. That meant a lot that they reached out to share that.
Were there any parts that you found difficult to write?
The scenes with the grandfather were hard to write because that part was based on real life. Sometimes I have to do readings and that’s always the hardest book of mine to read from and it seems like that is the book I’m always asked to read from.
What is your advice for aspiring writers?
Read as much as you can in your genre. Don’t write in a genre that you don’t enjoy reading because it becomes very obvious to the reader. Write the genre you both love AND respect.
