#Book Review #Romantic Suspense #Changing the Rules (Richter #1) by Catherine Bybee @Montlake

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Catherine Bybee comes the steamy first novel in her new adrenaline-fueled Richter series.

As an employee of MacBain Security and Solutions, Claire Kelly can certainly hold her own. Armed with an impressive set of covert skills, she’s more than prepared to tackle any job that comes her way…except one involving Cooper Lockman.

Cooper and Claire used to work together before his feelings for her sent him packing to Europe for six long years. But now he’s back and determined to ignore the still-smoldering heat that lingers between them.

Their current mission: go undercover together at a California high school to root out the mastermind behind a prostitution ring targeting young girls. The closer they get to the truth and the closer they get to each other, however, the deadlier their task becomes. As Claire and Cooper risk their lives to bring down their target, will their hearts be the final casualties?

My thoughts:

This is my first book by Catherine Bybee and I was really impressed by how immersive, even addictive her writing is. I kept reading until the small hours and couldn’t put the book down until the mystery was solved and everyone was safe (the final part was absolutely nailbiting in the best action movie tradition!).

24 year old security agent with a PI license Claire Kelly gets a new assignment. The case deals with a human trafficking ring which recruits vulnerable girls from a high school. Neil’s daughter Emma goes to a private school nearby and it appears that the traffickers have been targeting students from both schools. The police department has their own undercover agents involved in this case and it is possible, although not certain, that the agent/s have gone rogue. Claire and Jax, her best friend from their school days at Richter school, are sent to the schools with a triple task- identify potential victims, identify the traffickers and their accomplices and flush out the rogue agent. I think you can already see how exciting this mystery/ suspense is.

They are not alone. Claire is paired with Cooper Lockman, who has recently come back from the London office of MacBain Security and Solutions. Claire and Cooper have known each other since she was eighteen and was rescued from the shady happenings at Richter.

While there is undeniable chemistry between Claire and Cooper and their relationship develops gradually during the case, Catherine Bybee manages to strike a great balance between the focus on the investigation and the romance elements.

The protagonists are both strong, decisive, independent and caring in equal parts-no wonder sparks fly when these two friends decide to take their relationship to the new level. I’m just going to say it again-nothing beats good old friends-to-lovers trope!

In case you get the same strange feeling of being given the backstory on the go, while Changing Rules is the first book in Catherine Bybee’s Richter series, Claire’s mentor Sasha, Claire’s boss Neil (the owner of MacBain Security and Solutions) and his family- they appeared in Catherine’s previous books. It didn’t spoil my enjoyment of Changing Rules.

I really enjoyed Changing Rules and would love to read the continuation of the series. Whether you are a fan of Catherine Bybee, like a strong female lead or are just curious about the romantic suspense genre, I can definitely recommend this one.

Thank you to NetGalley and Montlake for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

The Mary Shelley Club by Goldie Moldavsky

New girl Rachel Chavez is eager to make a fresh start at Manchester Prep. But as one of the few scholarship kids, Rachel struggles to fit in, and when she gets caught up in a prank gone awry, she ends up with more enemies than friends.
To her surprise, however, the prank attracts the attention of the Mary Shelley Club, a secret club of students with one objective: come up with the scariest prank to orchestrate real fear. But as the pranks escalate, the competition turns cutthroat and takes on a life of its own.

When the tables are turned and someone targets the club itself, Rachel must track down the real-life monster in their midst . . . even if it means finally confronting the dark secrets from her past.

What I’m reading /listening to next:

Unwritten by Alicia Novo

Books whisper to Beatrix Alba. But they aren’t the reason she has never fit in. Bullied at home and school, she keeps a secret—a power of violence and darkness.

When the spell that keeps her hidden fails, she’s catapulted into the Zweeshen, a realm where all tales live, and her dream of meeting her favorite characters comes true. But wishes are tricky, and behind its wonder and whimsy, the Zweeshen is under attack. A character is burning bookworlds in pursuit of a weapon to rule both stories and storytellers. To succeed, he needs a riddle in Beatrix’s possession.

Now he’s hunting her down.

Joining forces with William, a cursed conjurer, Beatrix must face an enemy who knows her every weakness in a realm where witches play with time, Egyptian gods roam, and Regency heroines lead covert operations. And with her darkness as the only weapon, she may have to sacrifice everything to save a world that rejects her.

Natural Sorcery by Marina Ermakova

Rome was supposed to be safe–or at least safer than 90% of the planet. That was before the local legends started using their magic to destroy the food supply.
Considered one of Rome’s experts on legends, mostly because she keeps surviving their assassination attempts, Jordan finds herself racing to find the culprits before they strike again. But legends wield powers that aren’t documented, understood, or predictable. And Jordan isn’t even a soldier. She’s just some scientist unlucky enough to stumble over the local political mess.
The chances of getting murdered by magic beyond her comprehension is disconcertingly high. But if this unknown legend goes unchecked, Rome won’t survive the next few years…and Jordan doesn’t have it in her to walk away from that.

Book 2 in the Jordan Sanders series, beginning with Terrestrial Magic.

Twisted Lies (DI Kim Stone#14) by Angela Marsons

Her stomach lurches as she sits in the windowless room. He throws her phone to the ground, grinds it against the floor with the heel of his shoe and brings his face closer to hers. There was no turning back now, her life as she knew it was gone.

When the lifeless body of a man is found on an industrial estate, Detective Kim Stone arrives on the scene and discovers he’s been tortured in the worst way imaginable. But as she breaks the devastating news to the victim’s wife, Diane Phipps, Kim can’t help feeling that something isn’t quite right about the woman’s reaction.

Twenty-four hours later, the victim’s family disappears into thin air. Then a second body is found staked to the ground in a local nature reserve.

Desperate to crack the case open quickly, Kim and her team unravel a vital clue – a fiercely guarded secret that links both victims and could cost even more lives. A secret that some police officers are also protecting.

#Blog Tour #Uncork My Love by Richard Amooi #Romcom #Giveaway @rararesources

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for Richard Amooi’s latest romcom Uncork My Love.

Uncork My Love
A sweet romantic comedy set in beautiful Napa Valley!

Ivy needs a miracle and a drink—not necessarily in that order. With a struggling winery, the only hope of keeping her dream alive is snagging a gold medal at the annual wine competition. She’s determined to win, but she can do it without the help of Ted Jacobs, aka Mr. Know-it-All.

Ted wants to catch lightning in a bottle and create the world’s greatest wine, but he’s smart enough to know he can’t do it alone. When he heads to Napa to keep his grandma from ending up in jail (don’t ask), he meets Ivy. She’s as complex and intoxicating as his award-winning cabernet, but as stubborn as the mule next door when she stomps on his offer to collaborate.

Ted knows it’s risky to mix business with pleasure, but if Ivy would only listen, they might just be the toast of the town.

UK / US

My thoughts:

Richard Amooi’s wonderful romcoms are guaranteed to put a smile on your face. I really enjoyed this romantic escape to sunny Napa Valley with its gorgeous setting, fantastic characters, funny and tender moments and lots of delicious banter. Did I mention a couple of meddling grandmas who wouldn’t stop at anything in their matchmaking endeavours?

Ted Jacobs is a world-famous, award-winning winemaker with three degrees and a sweet charming disposition. When his beloved grandmother Loretta tries to enlist his help in stealing a vine from Half Moon Vineyards, which used to belong to their family long time ago, Ted is horrified. He’ll do anything for his grandma, but surely there are other ways- like… just asking the owner, Ivy Dobbs, to work together and produce a new wine mix using grapes from both estates. He is even ready to offer his business advice for free. Ted has so many ideas! The only problem is Ivy doesn’t want any help or anything to do with Ted.

When Loretta books a little holiday in Half Moon Vinyards Inn, run by Ivy’s grandparents, Ted knows he will have his work cut out for him trying to prevent his favourite senior citizen from ending up in a jail. Mr Generous-with-his-Time-and-Advice/ Mr Arrogant Know-It-All (depending on your point of view) just can’t help himself and stay away from Ivy and her business, which could indeed do with a few improvements.

‘Call it what you will, chemistry, interest, attraction, fascination, whatever. It was there’- this is how I felt about Richard’s book. Page after page, one hilarious scene after another, he totally charmed me with his fabulous timing and sense of comedy and relatable characters. When I retire I want to be as free-spirited as Loretta and have as much fun. Both Ivy and Ted have bitter divorces behind them and you can totally understand why Ivy might have trust issues. Some characters are there just to add the comic flavour (Michelle Raquel and the unfortunately named marriage counsellor), while others make us learn something about the protagonists and why they are such a great match.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how much I enjoyed getting a glimpse into Ivy’s wine-making business- I’d had no idea what a wine thief is or how important it is to organise various kinds of events and activities, including vinyard tours.

Uncork My Love is a sweet and adorable romance that will make you swoon one moment and laugh out loud the next, and if you aren’t already Richard Amooi’s fan, you will be after reading it.

#Book Review #The Good Sister by Sally Hepworth #Psychological Thriller @St.Martin’s Press

Synopsis:

From the outside, everyone might think Fern and Rose are as close as twin sisters can be: Rose is the responsible one and Fern is the quirky one. But the sisters are devoted to one another and Rose has always been Fern’s protector from the time they were small.

Fern needed protecting because their mother was a true sociopath who hid her true nature from the world, and only Rose could see it. Fern always saw the good in everyone. Years ago, Fern did something very, very bad. And Rose has never told a soul. When Fern decides to help her sister achieve her heart’s desire of having a baby, Rose realizes with growing horror that Fern might make choices that can only have a terrible outcome. What Rose doesn’t realize is that Fern is growing more and more aware of the secrets Rose, herself, is keeping. And that their mother might have the last word after all.

My thoughts:

Sally Hepworth is such a master story-teller! She will keep your attention until the very last page and misdirect it all the time. She will create characters you’ll love and hate and ache for when they are mistreated, abused or simply misunderstood. She will make you question everything and everybody and then will show you that people care and there are these mysterious things called empathy, hope and love…

Twenty eight year old twin sisters Roseand Fern are as different as you can imagine them to be. Rose is the responsible one, the worrier…and well she has plenty of things to worry about: her failing (or is it already failed?) marriage, fertility problems, coupled with a burning desire for motherhood, and her sister Fern, who has never been officially diagnosed with high-functioning autism, but does require a lot of care and support. Fern with her penchant for colourful clothes and princess Leila hairbuns, Fern who needs to do quite a lot of thinking to arrive at a reasonable interpretation of social clues, Fern who suffers from sensory overload issues, and yet, is surprisingly good at doing her job of a librarian. Fern and Rose have been keeping a terrible secret for many years that has cemented their reliance on each other and their bond.

Once you get to know the story of Rose and Fern’s childhood, how their mother raised them, why and what they had to protect each other from, perhaps you will understand the sisters better. Or perhaps not. The story is told from two points of- Rose (plus her diary written following her therapist’s advice) and Fern, and sooner or later you will have to decide whose narrative you trust more and what it all means for the plot.

The characters are wonderful. If I tell you more, I really risk giving away the story. Why are we so fascinated by twins? Is it because we seek an answer to the old question of nature versus nurture in a hope to avoid becoming our parents? at any rate, Sally Hepworth does a fantastic job of creating well-developed protagonists and a whole cast of interesting supporting characters with a few strokes of her pen. Even if you don’t like reading twisty thrillers, read this book for the way it raises awareness of sensory processing issues.

This is a psychological thriller, so be ready to ask yourself some questions about family dynamics, sibling love and the role we play in each other’s lives. Or should I say the roles? they may go back a long way, but it doesn’t mean they are set in stone.

Once again, Sally Hepworth surpassed my expectations with this riveting thriller, full of engaging characters and family drama.

Thank you to NetGalley and St.Martin’s Press for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

Thank you for reading the post!

Have you read The Good Sister or is it on your tbr?

#Blog Tour #Moonlight Over Muddleford Cove by Kim Nash #Rom-com @KimTheBookworm @rararesources

Today I’m absolutely delighted to participate in the blog tour for Moonlight Over Muddleford Cove, a heartwarming romance from Kim Nash! Just look at this gorgeous cover… Isn’t it sweet and romantic?

Moonlight Over Muddleford Cove

When thirty-four-year-old Nellie Wagstaff loses her job and discovers her fiancé is a cheating scumbag in a single day, she feels like the world has come crashing down. And that’s before the solicitor’s letter, along with a request to visit a place she hasn’t thought about for a very long time.

Heartbroken, Nellie escapes to the beautiful seaside town of Muddleford in Dorset, where she discovers she’s inherited more than she ever bargained for. Nellie never knew why her mother stopped talking to her sister, but now childhood memories of Muddleford come flooding back: long hot summers, the sea glistening beyond the sandy cove… and a stolen kiss with a boy called Jack.

Jack, now a devilishly handsome vet, has the local pet owners swooning over him, and as Nellie and he become close once more, and she gets used to gossiping with the locals and sipping wine at her beach hut with sand between her toes, she’s sure she can feel sparks flying once more. But just as she thinks she might be able to open her heart again, her newest frenemy, the glamourous Natalia, tells her a secret about Jack that changes everything.

Nellie will never know why her mother and aunt parted ways. She’ll sell the house, forget about Jack, and get back to real life. Because there’s nothing for her in Muddleford… is there?

An utterly uplifting and completely hilarious summer read about learning to trust yourself and of finding love and friendship in the least expected places for fans of Jessica Redland, Heidi Swain and Holly Martin.

Purchase Links
UK  / US

My thoughts:

This was such a lovely heartwarming read!

The story begins with our protagonist Nellie having one of those days when everything goes wrong. Her shoe heel gets broken, the bosses hint at possible job cuts and she accidentally leaves her shopping bags on the bus. Can’t get worse, right? wrong! Because this is the day when Nellie’s fiance tells her he doesn’t love her anymore and promptly moves out, leaving her to sort out all wedding cancellations. This is also the day when Nellie gets a letter from a solicitor firm based in Muddleford Cove, Dorset. Jobless, suddenly single, and in a desperate need to find a more affordable house, Nellie finds out that her Aunt Lil has passed away and she is the sole beneficiary of her aunt’s estate.

Nellie will have to make quite a few big decisions, but now she has more options to consider and some unexpected responsibilities. Her childhood crush Jack is still there, as gorgeous as ever, despite having a very grown-up job of a partner in the local vet practice. Jack and Nellie reconnect, while she is trying to get her head around all the changes in her life. And it isn’t just the old memories, the proverbial spark is definitely there. It’s just that Jack isn’t exactly free….

The characters in this book are so real and so relatable. Nellie is a lovely girl, kind and loyal, and it was great to see how she faces her past, deals with ups and downs of her present and ultimately finds her happiness in this beautiful little town on the sea. Jack was absolutely swoonworthy. My favourite secondary character (apart from Norm, sweet and adorable Norm) is Nellie’s bestie Shavini. Their banter was so entertaining!

The book was very easy to read and I got really immersed in the story. Kim Nash has a wonderful writing style that makes you feel like you are chatting to one of your friends, happy and relaxed in the knowledge that they love and understand you and your life. This was a perfect escape from the troubles of our daily life and we all need gentle and uplifting stories, now more than ever.

Looking forward to Kim’s next book!

She thought she accidentally slept with her boss…
Then she met his twin brother.

Real talk: I slept with my boss. Back before he even was my boss. Back when I had no clue who he was. Real talk: My boss is an arrogant jerk. I hate him. If we didn’t work so well together, I would have told him exactly where he could shove his pompous attitude a long time ago.

Turns out…my boss has a twin. Identical twin.

Now I know why he’s always acted like our one night together never happened. Why he acted like he’d never met me before when I started working for him.
It wasn’t him that night. It was his brother.
A brother who’s just as gorgeous as my boss and a hell of a lot nicer.

Real talk: I’m kind of…bothered that it wasn’t my boss that night.

But that’s before certain revelations about that night come to light.
