Playing with Fire
by April Henry
Published by: Henry Holt and Co. (BYR)
Publication date: January 19th 2021
Genres: Thriller, Young Adult

When a fire cuts off a popular trail in the Oregon forest, a small group trapped by the flames must find another way out―or die―in Playing with Fire, an unrelenting teen-vs-nature YA thriller by New York Times bestselling author April Henry.

Natalia is not the kind of girl who takes risks. Six years ago, she barely survived the house fire that killed her baby brother. Now she is cautious and always plays it safe. For months, her co-worker Wyatt has begged her to come hiking with him, and Natalia finally agrees.

But when a wildfire breaks out, blocking the trail back, a perfect sunny day quickly morphs into a nightmare. With no cell service, few supplies, and no clear way out of the burning forest, a group of strangers will have to become allies if they’re going to survive. Hiking in the dark, they must reach the only way out―a foot bridge over a deep canyon―before the fire catches them.

My thoughts:
A seventeen year old girl with a traumatic past and minimum first aid training, an eighteen year old Eagle Scout and ten other unfortunate hikers trapped in a forest ravaged by a roaring wildfire… April Henry’s latest YA thriller took me on a roller coaster of emotions and kept me reading until the small hours.

First things first…Natalia, a survivor of a domestic accident that resulted in a fire that destroyed her home and killed her little brother, goes on a first date/ hike with her co-worker Wyatt. Both of them are well-prepared and even have basic first aid kits. Of course, they do not expect that careless actions of a few criminals are going to set the forest where they are hiking on fire. There are other people on the same trail, although you wouldn’t even call them a group at the beginning of this incredible adventure. You have to admire April Henry’s skill at creating such a diverse group of characters with a huge range of ages, dispositions and medical conditions. They all have one goal: escape the fire and get to safety as soon as possible. They all have to face and overcome pain and fear and keep moving. They also have to pull together and share their meager supplies, support each other and work together.

Playing with Fire is an intense story. Told in short chapters with catchy titles, it is full of twists and nail-biting, heart-stopping moments. Everything that could go wrong for Natalia, Wyatt and their companions goes wrong. How likely is it that a small group will experience all these misfortunes and medical emergencies within twenty four hours? I’d say statistically impossible, but, boy, does it make for an exciting read!

I learnt a lot about survival techniques and the importance of being prepared when you go on a trip in nature. Fire safety, the mnemonics for checking life signs, a technique for reducing anxiety by focusing on what your senses perceive in the real world- this book isn’t just entertaining, it also has a great educational value.

I would definitely recommend this exciting YA thriller, inspired by the true events of the Eagle Creek Fire. If you like adventure stories with a touch of mystery and a tiny bit of romance, don’t miss this book.

#Cover Reveal #Baker and the Geek by Chelsea Millen @Indie Sage PR

Happy CoverReveal for Baker and the Geek by Chelsea Millen, coming January 30th!

Synopsis

Jax Austin has savior syndrome. When he crosses paths with down-on-her-luck baker Bekah Murphy, he decides to help her out of a hard situation. He should’ve put two and two together when the gorgeous cake connoisseur smashed a frosted cupcake in his face, but Jax has always had a sweet tooth… And Bekah’s delicious creations are too hard to resist, just like the sexy baker herself.

Bekah Murphy didn’t ask to be the damsel in distress. She owes favors to her ex-boyfriend who just humiliated her during her last catering event, and now a suspiciously friendly stranger is offering to help her ease into her new life in Magnolia Falls, a picturesque Midwestern town in the heart of Illinois. But Bekah didn’t move to the small town to find love with admittedly adorable, hunky Jax. She has big plans for her life and her bakery, and no time to waste…

What happens when organized mess Bekah is forced to accept Jax’s calm and kind offer for help? It’s a recipe for disaster… or the perfect equation for love.

Baker and the Geek is the first book in the Magnolia Falls, steamy small town romance series. May contain traces of light-as-meringue teasing and steamy hot chocolate kisses, but be ready, because this series turns the heat on, too. Perfect if you love delicious baked treats and a sexy-sweet love story worth the calories.

#Blog Tour #Book Review #Let Me Love You (Jeremy Lewis #2) by Lasairiona E. McMaster @rararesources

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for this fast-paced hockey romance.

Let Me Love You

Jilted by the only woman he’s ever loved, Jeremy Lewis is a man on a mission to be a renowned player – both on and off the ice. Who needs monogamy anyway?
But when he falls during a game, Jeremy finds himself laid-up with a potentially career-ending injury and his support network, suddenly gone. His best friend, AJ, is busy in a new relationship, his teammates are pursuing their own dreams of hockey stardom, and Jeremy is left frustrated, broken and alone.
Will their friendship survive AJ’s new relationship? Are Jeremy’s feelings for Chelsea truly a thing of the past? And can he persevere through his recovery to get back on the ice?

Amazon UK / Amazon US

My thoughts:
Let me Love You picks up from where the first book in Jeremy Lewis series Four Letter Feelings left off. I love standalones and do occasionally jump in into various series (especially, police procedurals), but this one is better read in order. The intense feelings of unrequited love, occasional lust (he is a ladies’ man, our Jer!), and, above all, loss and grief for his parents stem from the events described in the first book. I’d say even more, if you can, read also Lisa Milar and AJ Williams series to get a better understanding of Jeremy’s world. Sounds like a lot of books? well, they are totally addictive and chances are you’ll get through them in no time at all.

Jeremy is a fabulous character, despite or maybe thanks to his flaws- he is  loyal ( although he doesn’t kid himself into thinking that he’s always been as much there for his best friend AJ as he could have been), honest and kind-hearted. This year is the first year after the tragic loss of his parents. The Four Letter Feelings had a very realistic description of what it’s like to go through the first days, weeks and months of losing your loved ones: the pain, confusion, feeling alone and abandoned, missing their physical presence in your world, and even being worried you’d forget their voice and all the little details that made them different from everybody else. But of course you need time and mental space to deal with your grief and sometimes a lot of help from people around you. To make things worse Jeremy sustains a serious knee injury and may have to say goodbye to his dream of ever making it to the NHL. We get a lot more hockey in this book! Getting over this medical problem is going to take a lot of determination, focus, and emotional maturity. He also needs to get clearer about where he stands in his on-off relationship with Chelsea if he really wants future with her.

If you’ve read the first book or other series by Lasairiona McMaster, you know that her writing makes you want to immerse yourself into the characters’ world and read compulsively. The plot is focused on Jeremy and what is happening to him. There is very little extraneous detail, but it works for me, as we really get to know our character in and out.

Other series in this universe had three books, so the fact that Let Me Love You ends with a cliffhanger isn’t surprising. Slow burn is my favourite kind of romance- sometimes the characters are just not ready to be together, despite all the attraction and chemistry. And sometimes life gets in the way and you have to grow up and change to appreciate the Right One. Looking forward to reading Book Three!

Thank you to Rachelfrom Rachel’s Random resources and the author for the review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

Free-spirited Grace Sheldon is used to living on a tight budget as a freelance photographer. My thoughts:

If you are looking for a light and quick romance to help you get out of your reading slump, try Just One Kiss by Traci Hall. Based on the opposites-attract trope, it is a clean romance with unique characters. It also features rescue dogs, service dogs, an autistic child, and a few veterans with Post Tramautic Stress Disorder who are given a chance to feel useful and appreciated.

Grace Sheldon, a freelance photographer, who grew up in a communce with her free-spirited parents, inherits a lovely house overlooking a beautiful beach. Her grandmother would like this house to be a safety net for her children should they ever need a roof over their heads. The only problem is that there is also a substantial debt of unpaid taxes that Grace needs to pay. Otherwise, the bank is going to foreclose on the property. Grace has thirty days to come up with the money or lose the house of her dreams. She takes up a temp job of setting up an office for a new business in the town, although her paychecks aren’t going to come anywhere close to what she owes.

Sawyer Rivera is a celebrity dog trainer who needs to keep a low profile for a few months. His ex-girlfriend has been dragging his name in the press and he might lose all his contracts, unless she gets tired of spreading lies about him. Sawyer decides to go back to what he does the best and open a dog training camp. He also employs homeless veterans who have fallen on hard times and are in need of honest employment and a square meal. He even takes up a rescue dog without having met him (he is that confident in his training system). Lovable, but undoubtfully naughty Bert would melt anyone’s heart. Bert manages to break Grace’s expensive photo camera and this is our protagonists’ meet cute.

There is a spark, of course, and there is undeniable difference of lifestyle, financial situation, attitudes, and dispositions. Grace is independent and has been raised to feel suspicious of any kind of rules or authorites, while Sawyer, an ex-marine, believes in discipline and getting things done systematically.
Can Grace and Sawyer find things in common and let their differences bring the best in them? Can they appreciate how kind-hearted and generous both of them are ? and will Grace be able to save her grandmother’s home?

I enjoyed this romantic escape into sunshine, walks on the beach, training service dogs (I didn’t know that dogs can help people on the autism spectrum regulate their emotions), and a fair bit of drama. I guess I won’t spoil your enjoyment of the story if I say that there is a HEA (although I’d say a HFN would be more realistic given the timeframe). Traci Hall clearly knows how to write an entertaining and sweet romance.

Thank you to Netgalley, Entangled Publishing and Indiesage PR for the review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

Book details:

Title: Girl on the Ferris Wheel
Authors: Julie Halpern, Len Vlahos
Published by: Feiwel & Friends
Publication date: January 12th 2021
Genres: Contemporary, Romance, Young Adult

Synopsis:

In Girl on the Ferris Wheel, Julie Halpern and Len Vlahos expertly tackle this quirky and poignant romance that explores what first love really means—and how it sometimes hurts like hell.

Tenth graders Eliana and Dmitri could not be more different. He’s an outgoing, self-confident drummer in a punk band called Unexpected Turbulence. Eliana is introspective and thoughtful, and a movie buff who is living with depression.

Dmitri quite literally falls for Eliana when he sees her in gym class and slams into a classmate. The pair then navigate the ins and outs of first love. Exciting, scary, unexpected, and so much more difficult than they ever imagined. They say opposites attract, but they soon realize that there is so much they just don’t understand about each other. It begs the question: How long can first love possibly last when you’re so different?

Goodreads

Purchase

Amazon  / B&N / iBooks

My thoughts:

I really enjoyed reading Len’s previous book Hard-Wired, so when I saw that he co-wrote another YA novel, I was very excited about this touching, realistic, and sweet story.

Girl on the Ferris Wheel gives us two alternating POVs. Dmitri and Eliana come from very different backgounds and have very different personalities. Quiet, insecure Eliana has four other siblings and a stay-at-home dad, whose DVD rental store went out of business, while Dmitri is a second generation American Greek with a close-knit family, trying to integrate into American life and at the same time keep their distinct culture. Dmitri is a drummer in a band and a movie buff. He is also friendly and outgoing, which helps him to navigate high school social life with a lot of confidence and ease.

One of the best things about this book is that it provides a realistic representation of what it’s like to live with clinical depression and what it’s like to love and support a person with it. Eliana was briefly hospitalised and when she came back to school she found hersef almost isolated as a lot of her friends decided it was too complicated and awkward to be around her. Eliana’s struggle with her depression is written in a heart-breakingly honest way. Her inner dialogue is fascinating, with some hilarious runaway comments on what is happening at the moment and some dark moments with repetitive self-depreciating thought patterns.

It was interesting to see both perspectives on Eliana and Dmitri’s relationship with all the excitement and ups and lows of figuring out the other side’s feelings and opinions. Depending on your own experience, you might find one of the characters more or less relatable, but they are definitely realistic and memorable, and both of them go through a lot of growth and development. There is a wonderful cast of secondary characters, including Eliana’s best friend Janina, Dmitri’s surprisingly perceptive younger brother Niki, and adorable grandmother Yia Yia.

The only thing that didn’t work for me was the abundance of Happy Potter references, although I appreciate that being able to get and relate to well-known references (or the opposite, some obscure movie quotes) is a way of establishing a connection, finding your own tribe, which is a part of teen life.

I would definitely recommend this book. First romantic relationships aren’t easy because we still need to learn the importance of communication, but they are also exciting and genuine- like this book.
