#Blog Tour #Book Review #Opposites Attract by Camilla Isley #Romcom #Giveaway @rararesources @Camilla Isley

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for invitingme to participate in the blog tour for Camilla Isley’s newest romcom Opposites Attract which I thoroughly enjoyed and couldn’t recommend high enough to all romantics out there

Opposites Attract

First law of magnetism: opposite poles attract.

Single mom Vivian has been burned by love once before, and her job as a divorce lawyer has presented enough evidence to convince her there are no good men left in New York City.

The worst offender is her new neighbor: Dr. Lucas Keller, a couple’s therapist whose piercing blue eyes and flawless dark hair are just as annoying as his bad temper.

But when Luke starts poaching Vivian’s clients by saving their marriages, she makes it her mission to force him out of the building to save her practice. But it’s Luke who gives her the perfect opportunity when he proposes an unexpected bet.

With their offices at stake, Vivian and Luke play the field of love in a fierce battle of wits that quickly turns hot and personal, especially when Vivian’s daughter gets involved. Now, taking down Luke has become more than business for Vivian. It’s become a pleasure—and soon, Vivian and Luke will realize how pointless it is to fight the laws of attraction.

My thoughts:

I am a  big fan of Camilla Isley- she always puts a smile on my face with her easy writing style, great sense of humour and fabulously romantic stories.
At the heart of this newest story there are two universally acknowledged truths…Wait a second , three.

 Truth No 1
‘A single man in a posession of a good fortune must be in want of a wife’– well, Luke Keller, Dr Keller is a single man and a family therapist who is in want of a good work office. His best friend’s fiancee has even found him one, a lovely corner office that fits the bill perfectly, when…a certain divorce lawyer ( a queue-jumper and the-last-doughnut-in-the-shop-stealer) snatches it right from Luke’s nose. Luke settles for the second best office on the floor which happens to be opposite Vivian’s practice.

Truth No 2 ‘A good man is hard to find’
Whatever opinion you may hold of psychologists in general, and therapists, in particular, it’s impossible not to fall in love with Luke. He is kind, patient, funny, and modest. And he has chosen mending broken relationships for his living. Luke isn’t without his faults, which you will have to discover yourself (spoliler: he is a morning person!). Neither is Vivian or her sweet teenager (oxymoron, but here we go) daughter Tegan. Camilla Isley created well-rounded, sincere and caring characters that you are definitely going to root for. We get alternating perspectives of both protagonists, which is always fun in a romcom. The secondary characters are equally amusing.

Truth No 3 ‘A single mum of a teenage daughter, devoted to her child’s well-being and happiness, may find it  more difficult than average to date and find a soulmate‘, especially if the above-said mother has trust issues. To be honest, it took me some time to warm up to Vivian with her armour of legal effciency and courtroom confidence.  This is why I enjoyed this book so much. It is deeply romantic in its belief in being open-minded, looking beyond the first impressions and taking a chance on an unlikely realtionship which may turn out to be exactly what you need.

I could go on and on… Pick up the book and you will acknowledge Truth No 4: Camilla Isley knows how to write a good romcom, entertaining, sweet and easy to read. Looking forward to her future work!

#Thriller Thursday #Fatal Intent by Tammy Euliano @Oceanview Publishing

Synopsis:

When her elderly patients start dying at home days after minor surgery, anesthesiologist Dr. Kate Downey wants to know why. The surgeon, not so much. “Old people die, that’s what they do,” is his response. When Kate presses, surgeon Charles Ricken places the blame squarely on her shoulders. Kate is currently on probation, and the chief of staff sides with the surgeon, leaving Kate to prove her innocence and save her own career. With her husband in a prolonged coma, it’s all she has left.

Aided by her eccentric Great Aunt Irm, a precocious medical student, and the lawyer son of a victim, Kate launches her own unorthodox investigation of these unexpected deaths. As she comes closer to exposing the culprit’s identity, she faces professional intimidation, threats to her life, a home invasion, and, tragically, the suspicious death of someone close to her. The stakes escalate to the breaking point when Kate, under violent duress, is forced to choose which of her loved ones to save—and which must be sacrificed.

Perfect for fans of Kathy Reichs and Tess Gerritsen

My thoughts:

Fatal Intent is a kind of story that draws you in straightaway. Kate’s life isn’t easy- she lost her baby daughter and now her husband Greg is in coma, requires professional medical care and there is little doubt that his overall health isn’t improving. Greg’s brother is pushing Kate towards certain decisions she is unwilling to consider.

Then accidentally  Kate finds out that some of her patients die a couple of days after being discharged following a minor surgical procedure. the only thing they all seem to have in common is that Kate herself was the anesthesiologist in all of these cases, while the operations were performed by Dr Ricken. When Kate confronts the unlikeable surgeon, he retaliates by blaming her for what had happened to  her patients, all of whom were either elderly or bedridden and suffering from MS or Alzheimer’s. Kate has little choice but try to investigate and get to the bottom of these mysterious deaths.

The writing was absolutely gripping- not only does Tammy Euliano know what she is talking about in terms of medical issues and procedures, but she is also a talented writer able to grab the reader’s attention and hold it until the end. I really enjoyed the pace- it was just right, fast enough to keep me glued to the pages and at the same time there was enough space for Kate’s character to develop and come to terms with her grief and her losses.

The topic is very thought-provoking and relevant to today’s world, although it isn’t often discussed for the fear of being divisive. If you are a fan of medical thrillers and are looking for an intriguing story with an emotional punch, this is a book for you.

Thank you to Edelweiss and Oceanview Publishing for the review copy provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

#Blog Tour #Book Review #The Night Has Seen Your Mind by Simon Kearns @rararesources

Thank you to Rachel from rachel’s Random Resourses for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for The Night Has Seen Your Mind, a new science-fiction thriller by Simon Kearns.

The Night Has Seen Your Mind

Tech billionaire, Mattias Goff, has invited five creative professionals – programmer, pianist, writer, actor, and photographer – for a monthlong residency at Crystal Falls, his Arctic retreat.

Researching brain waves, and especially the enigmatic gamma wave, Goff asks his guests to wear a kind of EEG cap in order to record the electrical activity in their brains while they engage with their respective disciplines. Although they will be paid $5million each for the experience, they all start their sojourn a little wary – some more than others.

Cut off from the outside world in the stunningly beautiful, if stark, Alaskan winter landscape they immerse themselves in their work. Soon, though, reality seems to be shifting. What is Goff really researching? Are his guests only being observed, or manipulated?

My thoughts:

The Night Has Seen Your Mind is a fascinating science fiction thriller with a touch of mystery, survival and even horror. At times I thought I knew where the author was taking me, at other times I was surprised by the development of the events and the changes the characters were going through.

What is this all about? 5 representatives of 5 different creative professions are approached by the assistant of a reclusive billionaire and offered five million dollars in return for spending a month in a remote house in Alaska, doing their regular professional activities: coding, playing the piano, writing a novel, memorising lines and preparing to act a small part in an upcoming movie, and taking photos of this research project. Our characters see this as an opportunity and are quite happy to participate. all they will have to do is wear a cap registering their brain activity to provide the billionaire scientist research data. It soon becomes apparent that there’s a lot more to this experiment, things they hadn’t bargained for.

I don’t want to spoil the story by giving away the plot which I found really good. What I liked the most was the characters- the author took great pains to make them all as different fromeach other as possible, they all have unique voices and personalities and develop in their own unpredictable ways. You will like some of them, empathise and perhaps get annoyed with their actions, and will want to find out what will happen to them in the end. The story is told in short, snappy chapters and we get alternating perspectives that give us a better insight into the minds, thoughts and feelings of the characters.

Another fabulous thing about this book is its atmospheric setting. There is something special about the loneliness, harsh and unforgiving beauty of the Arctic circle that almost immediately makes you think of survival and what makes us human.

I definitely enjoyed the book and would recommend it to sci-fi fans. The science part isn’t too technical and is quite easy to follow. As it often happens with the best books in this genre, it is more about exploring ‘What if…’ and ‘Are we ready for this?, about seeing ourselves through somebody else’s eyes and asking deeper questions about our nature.I’ll be definitely looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

#Spell the Month in Books #March 2021 #Memoirs

This meme was originally created by Jana from Reviews From the Stacks, but I first saw it on Carla’s blog (Carla Loves to Read).

For this challenge, use the first letter of each book title to spell the current month (skipping articles such as A or The). You can either use titles from your tbr or books that you have read/reviewed.

Jana has created a formal linkup which she posts on the second Saturday of the current month. She also has a theme for each of these lists, although you are absolutely free not to follow it at all. Her theme for January was The First in the Series, for February- Clean Romance Books.

Memoir March

M Man’s Search For Meaning by Victor Frankl

Psychiatrist Viktor Frankl’s memoir has riveted generations of readers with its descriptions of life in Nazi death camps and its lessons for spiritual survival. Between 1942 and 1945 Frankl labored in four different camps, including Auschwitz, while his parents, brother, and pregnant wife perished.

Based on his own experience and the experiences of others he treated later in his practice, Frankl argues that we cannot avoid suffering but we can choose how to cope with it, find meaning in it, and move forward with renewed purpose. Frankl’s theory-known as logotherapy, from the Greek word logos (“meaning”)-holds that our primary drive in life is not pleasure, as Freud maintained, but the discovery and pursuit of what we personally find meaningful.

A Aftershocks by Nadia

This poetic, genre-bending work—blending memoir with cultural history—from Whiting Award winner Nadia Owusu grapples with the fault lines of identity, the meaning of home, black womanhood, and the ripple effects, both personal and generational, of emotional trauma.

Nadia Owusu grew up all over the world—from Rome and London to Dar-es-Salaam and Kampala. When her mother abandoned her when she was two years old, the rejection caused Nadia to be confused about her identity. Even after her father died when she was thirteen and she was raised by her stepmother, she was unable to come to terms with who she was since she still felt motherless and alone.

When Nadia went to university in America when she was eighteen she still felt as if she had so many competing personas that she couldn’t keep track of them all without cracking under the pressure of trying to hold herself together. A powerful coming-of-age story that explores timely and universal themes of identity, Aftershocks follows Nadia’s life as she hauls herself out of the wreckage and begins to understand that the only ground firm enough to count on is the one she writes into existence.

R Raceless by Georgina Lawton

From The Guardian’s Georgina Lawton, a moving examination of how racial identity is constructed—through the author’s own journey grappling with secrets and stereotypes, having been raised by white parents with no explanation as to why she looked black.

Raised in sleepy English suburbia, Georgina Lawton was no stranger to homogeneity. Her parents were white; her friends were white; there was no reason for her to think she was any different. But over time her brown skin and dark, kinky hair frequently made her a target of prejudice. In Georgina’s insistently color-blind household, with no acknowledgement of her difference or access to black culture, she lacked the coordinates to make sense of who she was.

It was only after her father’s death that Georgina began to unravel the truth about her parentage—and the racial identity that she had been denied. She fled from England and the turmoil of her home-life to live in black communities around the globe—the US, the UK, Nicaragua, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, South Africa, and Morocco—and to explore her identity and what it meant to live in and navigate the world as a black woman. She spoke with psychologists, sociologists, experts in genetic testing, and other individuals whose experiences of racial identity have been fraught or questioned in the hopes of understanding how, exactly, we identify ourselves.

Raceless is an exploration of a fundamental question: what constitutes our sense of self? Drawing on her personal experiences and the stories of others, Lawton grapples with difficult questions about love, shame, grief, and prejudice, and reveals the nuanced and emotional journey of forming one’s identity.

C Cured by Anne McTiernan

A trailblazing physician and health researcher shares her journey of perseverance and discovery.

Anne McTiernan’s second memoir begins in 1982, soon after she completed her doctoral training in public health research at the University of Washington at the age of twenty-nine. She and her husband are now parents to four-year-old and three-month-old girls. Realizing that jobs in her field are scarce, especially for women, Anne decides the only option for their financial security is to become a medical doctor. Overcoming her fear and life-long struggle with inadequacy, she moves the family 3,000 miles to New York to begin medical school.

Within a few months of starting this new life, Anne is in deep trouble. She is overwhelmed by the competing demands of motherhood and medical training and feels isolated. The stress builds, until Anne suffers a series of paralyzing panic attacks that threaten her ability to function. She begins psychotherapy and starts on a journey of self-discovery, realizing she has to change to survive.

H Hunger by Roxane Gay

From the New York Times bestselling author of Bad Feminist: a searingly honest memoir of food, weight, self-image, and learning how to feed your hunger while taking care of yourself.

“I ate and ate and ate in the hopes that if I made myself big, my body would be safe. I buried the girl I was because she ran into all kinds of trouble. I tried to erase every memory of her, but she is still there, somewhere. . . . I was trapped in my body, one that I barely recognized or understood, but at least I was safe.”

With the bracing candor, vulnerability, and power that have made her one of the most admired writers of her generation, Roxane explores what it means to learn to take care of yourself: how to feed your hungers for delicious and satisfying food, a smaller and safer body, and a body that can love and be loved—in a time when the bigger you are, the smaller your world becomes.

Have you read these books? If yes, did you like them?

What book titles woud you use to spell March?

#Blog Tour #Death at Rainbow Cottage by Jo Allen @rararesources

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for the latest addition to DCI Satterthwaithe series by Jo Allen.

Death at Rainbow Cottage
At the end of the rainbow, a man lies dead.

The apparently motiveless murder of a man outside the home of controversial equalities activist Claud Blackwell and his neurotic wife, Natalie, is shocking enough for a peaceful local community. When it’s followed by another apparently random killing immediately outside Claud’s office, DCI Jude Satterthwaite has his work cut out. Is Claud the killer, or the intended victim?

To add to Jude’s problems, the arrival of a hostile new boss causes complications at work, and when a threatening note arrives at the police headquarters, he has real cause to fear for the safety of his friends and colleagues…

A traditional British detective novel set in Cumbria.

Purchase Link

Amazon

My thoughts:

Death at Rainbow Cottage is the fourth book in the DCI Satterthwaite series written by British writer Jo Allen. A solid police procedural with complex characters and a clever plot, it can definitely be read and enjoyed as a standalone, but you will probably want to go back and read the other books in the series as well.

The book starts with a bang. A middle-aged man dies of stabbed wounds in a remote place, a couple hundred meters away from Rainbow Cottage that belongs to Natalie and Claud Blackwell. Natalie suffers from anxiety and OCD and often goes on long runs. She was the one who tried to resuscitate the dying man and then horrified, ran home, leaving bloody footprints on the cottage path.

Jo Allen immediately pulls us into her fictional world set in Cumbria. We meet DI Jude Satterthwaite as he is taking Natalie’s statement and immediately note his compassion and humanity as well as his observation skills. There is obviously a lot of character development, both within this book and in the series. Police procedurals often have to balance the investigation side of the story, the police work itself and the back story which shows how complex professional relationships get intertwined with the detective’s personal life. Jude still has unresolved family issues, although he is in a relationship with one of his colleagues. There’s also a new boss with her own policies and her own vision of what should be done to ensure greater equality and diversity in their workplace.

The book’s main topic is diversity, representation, and tolerance. The issues raised in the book are relevant to any workplace. Jude is criticised for being promoted just because he fit the traditional idea of a DCI should be like, but then again his work and the fact that he is a capable police offcer and team leader isn’t taken into consideration. The victims are gay and we see how deep homophobic attitudes run and how much sensitivity, consideration and determination changing them requires.

Jo Alen has a wonderful writing style. It is very easy to follow the story despite a fairly large set of characters. Although this was my first book in the series, at no time did I feel lost or missing ‘the insider’ knowledge. I still want to go back and read books 1-3, but more because I appreciate the author’s writing and her ability to create a clever tight plot and complex. multi-layered characters.

I can highly recommend Death and Rainbow Cottage to all readers who enjoy gripping and thought-provoking police procedurals.

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random resources and the author for the gifted review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.
