My thoughts:

Sweet and sparkling with positive energy- Julie Caplin’s The Little Swiss Ski Chalet is a perfect escape read. Who doesn’t dream of a holiday in a lovely, fairytale-like setting and delicious food? if it also involves working out a few things about life as well as meeting somebody special, even better!

Mina is a fun-loving, spontaneous, sweet girl from Manchester. She is a real foodie. Inventing new dishes or putting a spin on good old ones is what she does for living (she is a food technologist), while entertaining and organising wonderful, well-thought-through-to-the-last-tiniest detail dinners for her friends is her passion in her spare time. She does have someone special in her life and would love to take their relationship to the next level. When it all goes horribly wrong, Mina needs a short break from it all, a few weeks off work to let her think about what she really wants from life. Serendipitously, her (fairy) godmother Amelie invites her to stay at her little ski chalet in the Swiss Alps. There, surrounded by gorgeous scenery, Mina stumbles into a charming stranger Luke who is eerily similar to her in personality. Mina is on a mission to rein in her impulsiveness, not indulge in it, but perhaps there is still a HEA on the snow-capped horizon?

This is a wonderful new addition to Julie Caplin’s series aptly named Romantic Escapes. I absolutely adored all the chocolate talk (yep, I am an afficionado) and mouthwatering descriptions of traditional Swiss food. Amelie’s chalet with its warmth, cosiness and good company sounds like a perfect haven for anyone looking  for a break from the stress of our locked-down daily life. Amelie has a gift of notjust looking after her guests, but also  bringing out the best out of them. It’s a perfect place for Mina to reflect and  see what makes her unique and special.

Julie Caplin’s writing flows effortlessly. I really enjoyed the few hours I spent in the company of this delightful book. There is a bit of drama, humour and perfect amount of detail (her skiing descriptions would make even the most sedentary reader long for the alpine snow, stunning views from the ski lifts, and even muscles aching with pleasant exhaustion of physical exercise).

With its lovely, likeable characters, beautiful setting, sweet, slow burn romance, The Little Swiss Ski Chalet is a light and enjoyable read for anyone who loves fictional travelling and great food.

Thank you to HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter, NetGalley and Rachel for the gifted review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

Synopsis:

High school sweethearts Mia and Luke get a second chance at love in this brand-new contemporary romance from award-winning author Garrett Leigh.

When Mia Amour returns to England to open a florist shop, all she wants to do is put her lousy ex behind her and never look back. But getting a fresh start is easier said than done when her first love, the boy who once broke her teenage heart, strolls back into her life. He’s every bit as sexy as she remembers, and the urge to melt back into his arms almost makes her forget how devastated she was when he took off without a word. Almost.

Left with no choice, Luke Daley did what he had to do, leaving town to earn enough money to save his broken family, though it just about broke him, too. But now he’s back, running his uncle’s business and trying desperately to forget about Mia, the girl he left behind all those years ago. When he runs into her in town, the shock of seeing her again brings an intense rush of emotions: love, guilt…and an overwhelming urge to find out if it’s still as amazing between them as it used to be.

It doesn’t take either of them long to give in to desire and discover the fiery passion they once shared burns hotter than ever. With each new touch, each moment of forgiveness, old hurts heal and the future they’d hoped for ten years ago becomes possible again. But their fragile connection is tested by a threat neither of them saw coming—a threat that could end their second chance before it even gets started.

#Blog Tour #Book Review of Winter Whimsy by Georgina Troy @rararesources

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources dfor inviting me to participate in the blog tour for Georgina Troy’s new book Winter Whimsey, the third one in the Boardwalk by the Sea series of novels set on the island of Jersey.

Winter Whimsy

Zip up your puffer coat, winter has arrived!

When Lexi Davies discovers that her father has sold the fishermen’s cottages she runs as holiday lets and where she also lives, she is heartbroken. Then, when Oliver Whimsy arrives at the boardwalk and announces that he is the new owner, Lexi realises that the future she was looking forward to enjoying at her cottages is over.

Oliver might be handsome, wealthy and very sexy, but he’s new to the island and has already made a terrible impression on the locals. When he offers Lexi a job, she’s unsure whether she should accept. Unfortunately, she has little alternative if she wants a roof over her head for the winter.

As Lexi gets to know Oliver better, she discovers there’s far more to Oliver Whimsy than she or anyone else had imagined. Just what is the heartache Oliver’s trying so desperately to hide and why was he so determined to buy the cottages? Lexi wants to find out, but in order to do so she’s going to have to spend time with him…

My thoughts:

Winter Whimsy ( I just love this title!) is the third book in Georgina Troy’s series of novels set on the island of Jersey, The Boardwalk by the Sea. If you have read the previous novels, Summer Sundaes and Autumn Antics, which were about Sacha and Bella, you must have been waiting to find out more about their third friend-Lexi. Although technically the books can be read as standalones, I would recommend reading them in order as you would get a fuller experience and better understanding of the friends’ life circumstances.

Twenty nine year old Lexi has recently lost her mother who left her to manage three fishermen’s cottages that are very popular with holidaymakers and are Lexi’s only source of income. The cottages have been passed from mother to daughter for several generations. Imagine Lexi’s shock when Oliver Whimsy, a Scottish businessman, arrives to the cottages and claims Lexi’s father has sold them to him. After a brief confrontation with her impractical and artistic Dad, Lexi realises that now she will have to find a new job and a new place to live. She also suspects that Gloria, her father’s new girlfriend, may have had something to do with this transaction.

Oliver is very understanding. To make things better, he hires Lexi as a typist to help him work on his new business book. She can also stay in one of the cottages. Perhaps, the man isn’t as bad as the island community makes him out to be. The islanders’ opinions aren’t easy to change, though. Lexi, however, spends much more time with him and gradually finds out what real Oliver is like (spoiler alert: he is lovely, sensitive and thoughtful) and why he was so keen to purchase the cottages.

It was great to see how Lexi’s friends go out of their way to show her support. They are indeed friends for life. We also find out a bit about how Sacha’s business is getting on and what Bella’s relationship with her mother Claire is like now. The oldest resident on the island, ninety-year-old Betty, is as lovely as usual and it is wonderful to know that there are places where people care so much about their neighbours, old and new.

What I liked the most was the setting. Life on a small island may not be glamorous, but the nature and the island history make up for the lack of comforts. The descriptions of theweather are also wonderfully atmospheric and you get a very good feel for the bitter cold and gushing winds our characters have to deal with on a daily basis. Winter is also the season for so many marvellous holidays, including the Burns night and the villagers do seem to like a good party!

The book is very easy to read. In fact, I raced through it in half a day and now can’t wait for Jool’s story which is coming out in spring 2021. If you like series about groups of friends and don’t mind reading about grief and changing family dynamics and love winter descriptions, this book is for you!

Overland
by Ramcy Diek
Published by: Acorn Publishing
Publication date: November 10th 2020
Genres: Adult, Romance, Thriller

Synopsis:

Skyla Overland is proud to work for Overland Insurance, the company founded by her grandfather. She enjoys sharing an apartment with her best friend, Pauline, and is in love with Edmond. Besides one nerve-wracking insurance fraud case in the past, her sheltered life is uneventful and just the way she likes it.

Until one day, everything changes…

Skyla and Troy, the manager at Overland Insurance, are the last ones to leave the office. In the empty parking lot, Troy takes her in his arms. Why would he ruin their easy-going friendship by kissing her, especially since he knows she’s dating Edmond?
Left alone, Skyla hurries to her car, puts on her seatbelt, and glances in her rearview mirror.
The face of a stranger grins at her from the backseat. “How nice to see you again,” he hisses close to her ear.
Regaining consciousness, Skyla finds herself on the backseat of her own car, with her hands tied behind her back.

Is she getting kidnapped? Who is he? And where is he taking her?

My thoughts:

Content warnings: sexual violence, mental abuse, exploitation, child abuse

This was a surprisingly quick read, asI felt compelled to keep turning the pages until I got to the end of Skyla Overland’s terrifying ordeal. Skyla has been working for her father’s insurance company for six years. In this time she  has had to deal with a lot of claims. Most of them are genuine. Others are fraudulent and they are the ones Skyla would much rather not work with. Luckily for her, her co-manager Troy is always ready to support and help her. Although Skyla has a boyfriend, handsome, self-assured, almost perfect Edmond, deep down she knows there are some unaddressed feelings between her and Troy. Just before the Thanksgiving, Skyla gets abducted by a stranger  who drives her to a log cabin in woods. To her surprise and utter dismay, the abductor has three young children who have been severely neglected for years. You see the man intended Skyla to become a substitute mother /wife/ domestic help. WhileSkyla may try to fight back or escape, what about the three innocent children. She might be their own hope for salvation and life without abuse. Meanwhile, Skyla’s family keep on searching for and we know it’s only a matter of time she is going to be found.

This is obviously a plot driven novel. Straight from the beginning we get the sense of foreboding that Skyla is in danger and that she isn’t a random victim. Once she is taken to the cabin, we are horrified at what she has to endure to survive these long months. I also appreciated that the author included a part of what happens afterwards. There is also a bit of romance to counterbalance the focus on the kidnapping and survival, although I felt it wasn’t entirely necessary for the story or character development.

Skyla is such a resilient character, strong and independent. She might not have entirely clear ideas about her romantic life, but she’ll get there with time. What I liked the most about her is how she took care of the children and her sense of responsibility. The abductor’s character is more difficult to understand, but, then again, perhaps it is just my mind that refuses to comrehend how a human being, whatever their circumstances and past mistakes are, can do such things to other people, including the most fragile and innocent of them all- children.

The author herself included a few content triggers at the beginning of the book and I really appreciated her thoughtfulness. The story includes some dark moments and it is important to beware of them. If you like fast-paced, plot-driven thrillers with just a touch of romance, try Overland.

#Blog Tour #Love on the Winter Steppes by Paris Wynters @Inkslinger PR

Today is my stop on the blog tour for  Love On the Winter Steppes, a lovely new romance by Paris Wynters.

Title: Love On the Winter Steppes
Author: Paris Wynters
Genre: Contemporary Romance

About Love On the Winter Steppes:

Can a magical day at the Ice Festival melt this career-focused woman’s heart?

Marketing consultant Qara Whitaker loves her job, happily putting in endless hours and working through holidays. But when her grandmother asks that she accompany her on a birthday trip to Mongolia to visit their family, Qara can’t say no. Packing up her laptop, Qara boards the plane—never imagining that a shared cab ride with a stranger will change her life forever.

Hoping to push through writer’s block, author Benjamin Lacoy hops on a plane to Mongolia looking for inspiration. A chance meeting with a beautiful and intelligent woman whose smile ignites his heart leads to them playing tourists. Sparks fly and Ben is feeling far more than inspiration, yet each time he and Qara get close, she’s distracted by work.

Ben is torn; he likes Qara, but he always promised himself he’d never let work come before family and friends like his parents did. Opposites clearly attract, but can they learn to balance work with love in order to build a future together?

My thoughts:

I love a good winter book- you can curl up on your sofa with a cup of hot chocolate and forget all the world. Love on the Winter Steppes is a gorgeous romance of the best kind, the one with an exciting journey of self-discovery and realisation that you found your soulmate!

Qara Whitaker has been putting in long, long hours at work to ease her parents debt burden. With only two years difference between her and her travel blogger sister Rose putting both of them through the college wasn’t easy. The problem is her family may not see her dedication to work in the same way. They would like her to spend more time doing fun things, having social life, dating and yes, spending more time with them.

When Qara’s Emee (Mongolian for Grandmother) buys tickets for Rose, Qara and herself to go on a trip to Mongolia, Qara wants to prove that she can juggle both work and family. She would love to find out more about the country where her grandmother was born and its culture. There may be a few proposals to draft and clients to take care of, but you can do almost everything with the help of your phone nowadays. In Ulaanbaatar Qara meets a super cute writer of middle grade fantasy books Ben Lacoy. Ben who is suffering from a writer’s block and is in a desperate need for inspiration. Will Qara fall in love with the Mongolian culture and discover her roots? Will they let the magic of the Ice Festival open their hearts and help them see how wonderful they are together?

I love the opposites attract trope. Especially, when the opposites aren’t really opposite. Deep down, Qara values her family above anything else. Helping her parents pay off their debts is her way of showing her love and gratitude for what they have done for their children. Ben also promised himself that money will never come before family and friends in his life. They are wonderfully compatible, something Qara’s relatives see straightaway.

The setting was fascinating: the scenery, the food, the clothes. I found myself looking at the photos of the places Paris Wynters describes in her story and went on a beautiful cyber journey together with the protagonists. Couldn’t have asked for a better book on this locked-down winter day!

Recommended to all lovers of sweet, family-oriented romance who would like to discover a new, gorgeous place with fascinating traditions!

Thank you to Tule Publishing, the author and InkSlinger PR for the review copy. All opinions are my own and were not influenced in any way.

Failure is not an option.

Before he can track her, he stumbles across a woman being accosted by three men in the middle of the night. Even though she’s human, he intervenes and is shocked to recognize the face of the one woman he could never kill — his wife Anja.

She’s also the one he’s hunting…and if he doesn’t kill her then both their lives are at stake.

AUTHOR BIO:

Once upon a time N.J. had the idea that she would like to quit her job at the bookstore, sell everything she owned, leave her hometown, and write romance novels in a place where no one knew her. And she did. Two years later, she went back to the bookstore and her hometown and settled in for another seven years.

One day she gave notice at her job on a Friday morning. On Sunday afternoon, she received a tentative acceptance for her first romance novel and life would never be the same.

N.J. Walters is a New York Times and USA Today Bestselling author who has always been a voracious reader, and now she spends her days writing novels of her own. Vampires, werewolves, dragons, time-travelers, seductive handymen, and next-door neighbors with smoldering good looks–all vie for her attention. It’s a tough life, but someone’s got to live it.
