Twin River High Series by Kelly Anne Blount, Lynn Rush
Published by: Entangled Crush
Genres: Contemporary, Young Adult

Synopsis:

GUTTER GIRL – 5/10
Star football player Jace Rovers has a secret. And not just any secret—a shocking secret… He writes romance. The kind with swords. And dresses. And kissing.
Nobody knows. Not the other kids at Twin River High. Not his overbearing parents. And certainly not the millions of fans who’ve read his book on the writing platform Scribbles. And that’s the way he plans to keep it.
Except suddenly one of the other football players grabs his notebook in jest and starts reading a kissing scene out loud…and Jace knows he’s busted.
But then McKenna Storm, resident goth girl who avoids the spotlight like a virus, snatches up the notebook and tells everyone she’s the author. And lucky for Jace, she later agrees to continue the ruse…for a price.
Heck, he’d give her anything not to reveal his secret. But when they start to fall for each other, he knows he’ll have to keep the biggest secret of all—his darkest character is based on her…

PROJECT PERSONALITY – 5/17
Hope Chambers has a major problem. She’s spent the entirety of her four years of high school focusing on being perfect—perfect grades, perfect extracurriculars, perfect essays—to the point that she forgot to get a life. And now she’s perfectly boring.
She’s got exactly two weeks before her admissions interview for MIT to spice up her life and get a personality, dammit. And she knows exactly who can help her: soccer star and Mr. Popularity himself, Landon Watkins. But how does a nerdy, socially awkward girl ask the most charismatic guy in school to help her become interesting?
Saving his life in the school cafeteria is a pretty good start.
No one is more surprised than Hope when Landon agrees to help her. But what he proposes they do takes her so far out of her shell, she’s practically in a different ocean. And when she starts falling for the last guy she ever expected to, it has her second-guessing every decision she’s ever made

CHAOS THEORY – 5/24
Corey Chaos, teen YouTube sensation, just needs a break from his hectic schedule. Ever since his musical talent was “discovered” by the right person at the right time, his life has been a steady stream of interviews, screaming fans, TV shows, screaming fans, Instagram lives, and did he mention the screaming fans? He’d give anything to be a normal teen again, even for five minutes. So, when his agent suggests staying at his pool house for a month to get away from the stress, Corey is on the next plane to snowy Twin River, Wisconsin.
As soon as he gets there, though, his agent’s gorgeous teen daughter, Victoria, asks for his help—and Corey can’t bring himself to say no to her. Not after the video of her boyfriend dumping her in the school cafeteria went viral with its own hashtag, #LunchDump. Ouch. That’s not the way you want to get a million views. No one, especially a sweet girl like Victoria, deserves to be treated that way.
But then she tells him about her big plan to get revenge on her ex. And Corey’s certain his starring role has chaos written all over it.

The man who loves her

And an evil that could destroy them both

The sea is calling. . .

Lena—who was born as a merrow but walks as a human—is now in possession of the Magiske Skal: the shell once owned by the queen of the merrows. With its power comes untold danger, and should it fall into the wrong hands, the Fosse-Søfolk will face an evil they cannot overcome. Lord Jarl knows what Lena has, and he wants it for himself.

After running away from the Lundby-Wyatt Inn, leaving behind everything she was familiar with, Lena finds herself in the company of the warm and kind Soren Emil.

Lena knows she must get the shell back to the sea and destroy it, before it falls into the hands of Lord Jarl—or worse, his possessive apprentice, Jace Wyatt.

With the help of some unruly pirates, Lena and Soren journey to the sea, where Lena thought she’d never return. There, she will have to face not only the Sea King’s army, the Fosse-Søfolk, but the impossible choice to sacrifice her own life, or the life of the man she loves to keep the Magiske Skal from the evil that craves it.

#Blog Tour #Book Review of Val (The Hawks 2) by Jennie Lynn Roberts #Romance #Fantasy @Xpresso Book Tours

Book details:

Val
by Jennie Lynn Roberts
(The Hawks #2)
Publication date: April 22nd 2021
Genres: Adult, Fantasy, Romance

Synopsis:
He’ll do anything to save her. And then he’ll say goodbye…

Being framed for murder, captured, and tortured for weeks didn’t break Val. But seeing Alanna every day, knowing she didn’t love him as he loved her, surely would. So, he’ll do whatever is necessary to stop the king from executing her…then he’ll walk away. Forever.

Queen Alanna gave up everything—including her soul mate— to secure the treaty that would end the war. Now, her husband wants her dead and any chance she had for true happiness with Val is ruined.
The king’s new guards are arrayed against them, the threat of war looms large, and their enemy has the upper hand. When all is said and done, will Alanna choose to sacrifice her own happiness to save her kingdom? Or will she risk it all for a second chance at happily ever after with Val?

Val, book 2 in The Hawks series, is a sexy, steamy, adult fantasy romance full of swords, shifters (kind of), and tons of action. But fair warning: This book is intended only for readers who love slow burn romance, fast-paced adventure, soul mates and found family—and characters who curse when they fight for survival. If that’s you, happy reading.

My thoughts:

Earlier this year I read Tristan, the first book in the Hawks series, and it was so entertaining that I just couldn’t wait to see the other other side of the story. As a very brief recap (the briefest of them all, I promise!): Tristan, Val and Val’s younger sister Nim used to be inseparable childhood friends. When Tristan and Val grew up, they became royal guards. Val’s duty was to protect the haughty princess Alanna, a foreigner who recently married Prince Ballamore, the throne heir. Val has changed and won’t confide in anyone in the Hawks, their elite troops, and, unfortunately, this includes Tristan, for whom trust and honour are everything. In the first book we got Tristan and Nim’s story, and I was really looking forward to finding out what exactly happened to Val and seeing the events from his point of view! Can Val be read as a standalone? probably yes, but I would still recommend reading Tristan.

First, we go back to what happened before Val’s alleged treason and find out a little bit more about Alanna’s marriage and why she made Val promise to keep secret what he knew about it. Alanna’s mission is to stop the war that is destroying her home country. She would sacrifice everything for the peace treaty, even her life and personal happiness. Her maid Keely and Val are the only people who know (to some extent) what’s been going on and see how the prince and his cronies are turning everyone against her by spreading malicious gossip. Then Ravenstone trap happens. Whatever Alanna’s feelings for Val are, she won’t let him give up his life for her. Only Val has never broken a promise in his life and he would rather be tortured and die than run away from his duty of protecting Alanna. When the Hawks saved Val from the prison, Alanna was left behind and sentenced for execution. The rescue operation was absolutely brilliant and so romantic. Still, there is so much standing between the protagonists and their happily-ever-after, including the bloodthirsty king, Val’s resentment over having been ‘rejected’ by Alanna, while also mistrusted and betrayed by his friends, misunderstanding each other’s feelings and lots of other things that fortunately for us, readers, make up an excellent story!

It was great to see the familiar faces and learn more about this incredible group of soldiers with quite unusual abilities. And of course, I needed to see how Nim and Tristan’s relationship was progressing. Here we meet and gradually learn to love and respect a new badass heroine, who couldn’t have been more different from Nimmy. We see a huge development in Alanna. All her life has been about duty, but now she isn’t a little girl princess living an isolated life, now she is growing into herself and becoming a formidable queen. Captain Intense (Val) surely fell in love with a person who has her heart in the right place.

I absolutely adored the book and just couldn’t put it down until I turned the last page. Jennie Lynn Roberts has a very engaging writing style which flows effortlessly and transports to this amazing world with its natural beauty and diversity. If you are a fan of fantasy romance, you are going to love it! The build-up, the tension, the development, the intensity of feelings – it’s all there and of course, there are plenty of adventures to entertain you. Beware that this is an adult series, so there are some very hot and steamy scenes.

Thank you to Giselle from Xpresso Book Tours and the author for the review copy, provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

Jennie Lynn Roberts believes that every strong, kickass heroine should have control of her own story, a swoony hero to support her at every turn, and a guaranteed happily ever after. #Blog Tour #Raven Fire (Fire-Walker 4) by Emma Miles #Fantasy @rararesources

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s RandomResources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for Raven Fire, the final instalment in Emma Miles’ breathtaking Fire-Walker epic fantasy series.

Raven Fire

Is prophecy real; can Arridia and Joss defeat a god?

Evil never sleeps, and neither can the fire spirits who have guarded Kesta and her family so faithfully for more than fourteen years. United in a desire for peace, the four lands beneath the sky have enjoyed relative stability, but under the surface stirs unrest. Greed, ambition, disquiet, rebellion; and the ever-present threat of Geladan’s crazed god discovering she has been fooled.
Quiet Arridia is a Raven Scout, dedicated to the principles and hopes of her parents. When an opportunity presents itself to come home, she grasps it, longing to settle and find the love she has patiently waited for.
Fun-loving Joss is drawn to the court of Elden with all its colour, noise, and intrigue; but has he taken on more than a young man can survive?
Raven Fire is the final part of the breath-taking Fire-Walker saga.
If you could, would you dare to change the world?

My thoughts:
Raven Fire is the perfect conclusion to Emma Miles’wonderful Fire-Waker series. The previousbook are Raven Tower, Raven Coven and Raven Storm. I’m very lucky to have been invited to participate in this blog tour, as, unbelievably, I had never heard of this series and it was  one of the most fascinating surprises this year. You can read Raven Fire without reading the previous books, but trust me, the world building is so good and the character building is so solid that you’d better start from the beginning and get immersed in this epic journey.

The world building is incredibly detailed and all pains have been taken to help the reader understand the geography and culture of the four distinct lands that are dealt with in the series. The blurb for Dark Tower describes them in this way: ‘Four lands beneath the sky. A haven of peace, a kingdom of plenty, ravaged islands, and a nation of cruel, dark magic.’ Obviously, things have changed quite a lot since the first book (no spoilers!), but the narrative includes storylines from various places and I was really grateful to the author for clearly naming each chapter with its protagonist and the place they’re in.

The characters are well-differentiated. This is an epic fantasy book, so a large cast of characters is almost a must. Still, they all had  unique voices and distinct personalities. The events takeplace fourteen years after the previous book, so here we have the old generation and their  children who are also fighting their battles, fighting for peace and freedom (women slavery is one of the most prominent topics in the series). I was glad to see Kesta and Jorrun’s children grow into brave and responsible leaders. King Bractius’s children Lucien, Scarlett and Eleanor  are also among the key players in this final book.

There is a prophecy and an epic battle against Evil ( a large part of the story is the prparations forthe battle). You might be surprised about how the things play out in the end. Personally, I found the way EmmaMiles  ties all the loose ends very satisfying, although there is a potential for more stories and future spin-offs.

The whole series is extremely well-written and I cannot recommend it highly enough. Hope Emma decides to re-visit this marvellous fantasy world in future….

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources and the author for the review copy, provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

Author Bio

I often get asked when I knew I was a writer; the answer is always. A writer is what I am, it’s in my soul. There have been times in my life when I couldn’t write, and times when my writing has been the only thing that kept me going. I think I always longed for something deeper from life, something more meaningful, and I found it in my imagination and in the music of words.
It was poetry which first caught my attention, and whilst my younger cousins called for ghost stories it was animals I first wrote of. I think I gravitated toward fantasy because of the freedom it gives, I could create my own worlds and decide my own rules. My Wind’s Children trilogy was born from an image that came to me whilst daydreaming, of a young man sitting alone below a bridge. I didn’t know who he was; it turns out neither did he, but we found out together.
I’m now working on my eleventh book and love writing more than ever, it’s an addiction, an obsession, but one I now share with my wonderful writing family. My beta readers, my editor, and you, my readers, having you with me on my journey means the world to me.
I write as much as I can around work, but I also try to squeeze in a ridiculous amount of hobbies! I’m a wildlife photographer and do a little archery. I paint, sculpt with clay, withies and driftwood, preferring to be outdoors if I can. I still have a love for the theatre, having started out in life studying backstage crafts, and a great love for language. I speak a little French, Romanian and Italian, ma non molto bene!

Thanks for reading this. If you read any of my books and love them, please come say hello and tell me, you’d be surprised at how much that means to an author.
Take care of yourself.

Life’s A Beach

Sun, sea and inescapable exes…

Peach is excited to hear that her sister, Di, is getting married. Of course, she would have preferred her little sister to be engaged to someone she’s known longer than a week – and the fact that his name is Charles doesn’t bode well – but who is she to judge?! Afterall, her own love life is non-existent, and who doesn’t love a destination wedding…?

Whisked away to the gorgeous Italian coast, Peach assumes her role as chief bridesmaid and, despite her reservations about the groom, she tries to ensure everything goes to plan.

But weddings are never straightforward affairs… throw in some unexpected guests in the form of ex-boyfriends and one night stands, and soon enough there is more drama than a reality tv show.

Can Peach keep the show on the road, or might she end up in a whirlwind romance of her own…?

Escape to the stunning Italian coast with bestseller Portia MacIntosh. Perfect for fans of Sophie Ranald and Mhairi MacFarlane.

My thoughts:

Portia Macintosh is my auto-buy author. There is something special about her romcoms, something kind and uplifting. Her newest one, Life’s a Beach is as good, if not better, as her previous books, so if you’re a fan of Portia’s writing set aside an afternoon (you know you won’t be able to stop until you’ve devoured the book) and pick up this light and entertaining read.
Peach loves her job and she is great at it. She is a mystery shopper which means she gets to check out what the service is really like at various restaurants, shops, hotels and even chemist chains, and then she has to write an honest report for the business. Sometimes she has to get into a character and even mention her fake fiance Matt once or twice. This time she is having a dinner and is staying overnight in a hotel near the airport and she is doing it with her younger sister Di who is about to fly back from her holiday in Greece. Only Di’s flight gets delayed and Peach meets aman who is similarly waiting for somebody arriving with the same flight. She invites him for a dinner and has the best date/non-date of her life. One thing leads to another and… The attraction is so strong that Peach is totally justified being disappointed to find out Matt left without  a word or even a note.
When Di’s flight finally lands, she has a  bombshell of news of her own- she is getting married to someone she has known forone week. Should Peach try to stop her from making this huge mistake or is is the case of ‘When it’s love, it’s love’and she should just be happy for Di? The wedding party throws in a heap of  surprises, including a few blasts from the past. What happens next is a real comedy of mistakes and misunderstandings to the soundtrack of ‘It’s the Groundhog Day…Again and again…’
I really like all Portia’s lead characters. Peach is strong and realistic at the same time. She is kind, caring and forgiving. When life throws her a curveball, she picks up pieces and gets on with it. Her message is really positive: everyone makes mistakes and everyone deserves a second chance. I must say I wasn’t sure she was going to have her happily-ever-after at the end of this book- this is how realistic this romcom is, but then the ending just melted my heart and was so true to the characters.
Reading this book was like a mini-holiday with all the sunshine, happy, warm feelings, and lovely memories of being truly relaxed and entertained . Thank you so much, Portia, and I hope to read your next book very soon!

My Inspiration for The Legacy by Alison Knight

Like most authors, I’m often asked where I get the inspiration for my books. I usually get my ideas from all sorts of sources – a snippet of conversation, a picture, a memory … but my inspiration for The Legacy came from an unusual source – my previous book!
It took me many, many years to write my last book, Mine, because it was based on events that happened in my family and was very hard for me to get down on paper. It was eventually published by Darkstroke Books in November 2020.

I was child at the time the events depicted in Mine took place, so there were huge gaps in my knowledge of what was going on around me then. In some cases, I could find out what actually happened from official documents or family memories, but there were some instances where, fifty years after the event, there was no way of finding this out. I needed to use my imagination, my knowledge of the people involved and the culture of the time to create fictional scenes to fill the gaps.

One such scene involved two of the main characters visiting an elderly spinster in a nursing home to witness her new will. She had decided, just days before her death, to leave her fortune to her god-daughter, with a relatively small gift to her nephew, who had previously been her main heir. She explains that she disapproves of his ‘profligate lifestyle’ and wants him to buck his ideas up.

After I’d finished writing Mine, I kept thinking about that scene. What sort of mischief had her nephew been getting up to? How would her god-daughter react to her new-found riches? Was it a simple case of the good, attentive god-daughter triumphing over the self-obsessed, lazy nephew? What secrets will the spinster reveal from beyond the grave? In the end, I had to write their story.

That spark of an idea which started in one book lead to a story of greed, intrigue and desperation. Hard lessons are learned by all the characters as they try to protect themselves from the fallout from the legacy.

After the emotional roller-coaster of writing the very personal story in Mine, writing The Legacy was an absolute delight. It starts with a prologue – the will-signing scene from Mine – and takes us on a journey with James and Charlotte as they deal with the repercussions of their unexpected legacies. There are some cameo appearances from some characters from Mine. The difference is that The Legacy is pure fiction and although it contains some nods to Mine,The Legacy is a standalone story.

Taking inspiration from my previous book seems to have set a precedent. My next book, due to be published in December 2021, follows the story of James’s girlfriend, Fliss. Three years after the end of story told in The Legacy, she is living in another country, using a different name and living a life that seems completely alien to the pampered, party-loving girl she is in The Legacy. I hope you enjoy reading The Legacy and that you’ll then want to find out what happens to Fliss.
