It’s Monday! What are you reading? July 26th, 2021

It’s Monday! What are you Reading is a weekly meme hosted by Kathryn from Book Date, a place to share and discuss what we’ve read in the past week and what we’re in the middle of or are planning to read this week.

What I read / listened to last week

Life’s What You Make It by SianO’Gorman (Blog Tour on July 23rd)

After 10 years in London, working in a stressful City firm, Liv O’Neill returns home to Sandycove, a picturesque seaside village, just outside Dublin to care for her mother after a fall.
Whilst Liv reconnects with friends and family, she is amazed by Sandycove’s thriving community spirit with its artisan shops, delis and cafes – it’s not quite the place she left behind.
As village life begins to creep under her skin, Liv is forced to confront the things that drove her away.
Can Liv balance her past, present and future and find her own happy place?
And will a handsome young doctor help her make a decision about the life she really wants?
Suddenly her old life in London begins to seem extremely unappealing and Liv is forced to use her family’s past in order to forge a brand new future.

A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik

Lesson One of the Scholomance: Learning has never been this deadly.

A Deadly Education is set at Scholomance, a school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death (for real) — until one girl, El, begins to unlock its many secrets.

There are no teachers, no holidays, and no friendships, save strategic ones. Survival is more important than any letter grade, for the school won’t allow its students to leave until they graduate… or die! The rules are deceptively simple: Don’t walk the halls alone. And beware of the monsters who lurk everywhere.

El is uniquely prepared for the school’s dangers. She may be without allies, but she possesses a dark power strong enough to level mountains and wipe out millions. It would be easy enough for El to defeat the monsters that prowl the school. The problem? Her powerful dark magic might also kill all the other students.

What I am reading/listening to now:

A Bad Day for Sunshine by Darynda Jones

Sheriff Sunshine Vicram finds her cup o’ joe more than half full when the small village of Del Sol, New Mexico, becomes the center of national attention for a kidnapper on the loose.

Del Sol, New Mexico is known for three things: its fry-an-egg-on-the-cement summers, strong cups of coffee – and, now, a nationwide manhunt? Del Sol native Sunshine Vicram has returned to town as the elected sheriff – thanks to her adorably meddlesome parents who nominated her–and she expects her biggest crime wave to involve an elderly flasher named Doug. But a teenage girl is missing, a kidnapper is on the loose, and all of this is reminding Sunshine why she left Del Sol in the first place. Add to that the trouble at her daughter’s new school, plus and a kidnapped prized rooster named Puff Daddy, and, well, the forecast looks anything but sunny.

The Family Upstairs by Lisa Jewell (audiobook)

Soon after her twenty-fifth birthday, Libby Jones returns home from work to find the letter she’s been waiting for her entire life. She rips it open with one driving thought: I am finally going to know who I am.

She soon learns not only the identity of her birth parents, but also that she is the sole inheritor of their abandoned mansion on the banks of the Thames in London’s fashionable Chelsea neighborhood, worth millions. Everything in Libby’s life is about to change. But what she can’t possibly know is that others have been waiting for this day as well—and she is on a collision course to meet them.

Twenty-five years ago, police were called to 16 Cheyne Walk with reports of a baby crying. When they arrived, they found a healthy ten-month-old happily cooing in her crib in the bedroom. Downstairs in the kitchen lay three dead bodies, all dressed in black, next to a hastily scrawled note. And the four other children reported to live at Cheyne Walk were gone.

The can’t-look-away story of three entangled families living in a house with the darkest of secrets.

What I’m reading /listening to next:

The Dating Dare by Jayci Lee

Jayci Lee, author of A Sweet Mess, returns with The Dating Dare—her next witty, chemistry-filled romantic comedy.

Tara Park doesn’t do serious relationships. Neither does she hop into bed with virtual strangers. Especially when that particular stranger is her best friend’s new brother-in-law. It isn’t an easy decision, though. Seth Kim is temptation personified. His unreasonably handsome looks and charming personality makes him easy on the eyes and good for her ego.

When a friendly game of Truth or Dare leads to an uncomplicated four-date arrangement with Seth, Tara can’t say she minds. But their dates, while sweet and sexy, have a tendency to hit roadblocks. Thankfully, their non-dates and chance meetings get frequent and heated.

Seth is leaving for a new job in Paris in a month and a no-strings attached fling seemed like a nice little distraction for both… But soon Seth realizes that Tara Park doesn’t come in a “nice & little” package–she’s funny and bold, sweet and sexy, and everything he ever wanted and never expected to find. Neither of them are ready for something serious and both have past relationship baggage they’ve been ignoring, but with a shot at forever on the line will they follow their hearts and take a chance on happily-ever-after?

How did your last week go and what are you reading this week?

#Blog Tour #Sun, Sea and Summer Vibes by Zoe Allison @rararesources

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for inviting me to participate in the blog tour for Zoe Allison’s hot summer romance Sun, Sea and Summer Vibes.

Sun, Sea and Summer Vibes

Sometimes first impressions are far from the truth…

Nina Darwish is a scientist who likes to proceed with caution and careful deliberation. When she arrives at the party destination of Ibiza to play PA for her best friend and international pop sensation Isla Starr, she has trouble adapting to the carefree and easy-going vibe on the island. The situation isn’t aided by Isla’s seemingly surly yet irritatingly attractive music producer, the world-renowned dance DJ Logan Wild, known by his real name—Cameron—to his friends. Plus, Nina’s run-ins with, and repeated rebuttal of, an extremely entitled and very annoying male singer named Zac don’t help to aid her mood.

Unbeknownst to Nina, Cameron remembers her from the past, when he was a geeky student who admired her from afar. Unfortunately, it’s clear that Nina considers him ill-natured, no doubt due to his natural awkwardness, which he masks using a stage persona. However, even if that weren’t the situation, he’s involved in a dead-end relationship with his celebrity girlfriend Ash. Plus, Nina’s eye appears to have been drawn onto Ash’s no good ex-boyfriend, Zac, therefore there’s no point in believing anything could ever happen between them.

But despite all of that being the case, for some reason, he just cannot stop thinking about her.

If I told you that most of the action in Zoe Allison’s new book takes place on the island of Ibiza, would the picture you envision include disco, music, and parties? if these are the first things that came to your mind, well, you’re on the right track….There’s also a super sexy DJ, a singer, a rising influencer star…and a geeky scientist, who happens to be the singer’s BFF. Don’t forget an arrogant celebrity, who just won’t go away and who likes to put the spanner any time he gets a chance… A few misunderstandings, deep emotional connection seemingly coming out of nowhere, obsession, flirting and forbidden attraction, and finaly passion- all the elements of a holiday romance are here, so let’s unpack them.

Nina has recently been made redundant and is at a crossroads as far as her future is concerned. When her best friend Isla, who has been climbing musiccharts, calls her and invites her to Ibiza (officially to work as a PA, unofficially to have a lovely all-paid holiday to help them reconnect with each other, Nina doesn’t think twice. Once Nina is on the island, she is immediately drawn into the whirlwind of Isla’s world. Nina gets hit on by an unlikeable A-list celebity Zac (who she can’t stand) and meets mysterious DJ Logan Wild a.k.a Cameron who studied at the same Scottish university as Isla and Nina. Cam is difficult to work out-he seems cold and stand-off-ish at first glance. Not that it should matter, since he has an influencer girlfriend Ash. Cam and Isla are supposed to work together on a song, but Nina is getting more and more worried about her friend behaving strangely. If all of this isn’t already complicated, Isla gets together with Zac, who aso happens to be Ash’s ex. Cam+Ash, Zac+ Isla, Nina-…? Nina isn’t there to fall in love, she is supposed to help Isla organise her work and this noble intention on her part means she gets to talk to Cameron quite a lot and discover that she might have been too hasty in her first impression of him.

Despite the complex love geometry, this is a fairly short book and I don’t want to give away the story. There were some interesting issues touched upon: feeling disconnected from one’s family and friends because of focusing too much on career and fame, negative aspects of social media (trolls etc), biracial representation, losing a parent and trying to be what you think would have made them proud of you, being with a person because of their looks and judging them for superficiality at the same time. I had a few niggles, the biggest of which is the ‘better that the other girls’ vibe, but this is just my personal opinion.

Finally, I loved this cover: sun-soaked days, sandy beach, crystal-clear sea, and a book in your tote bag- what more can you ask for a perfect holiday?

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources and the publisher for the review copy.

Author Bio –
Growing up, Zoe Allison loved stories about falling in love. But rather than being rescued by a knight in shining armour, she imagined herself fighting dragons alongside him, battling supervillains as heroic allies, or teaming up to dive into perilous waters in order to save a loved one from drowning. Once Zoe did grow up, she became a doctor. But as time went on, she craved a creative outlet to counter the soul sapping burnout that her career inflicted upon her, and also to achieve those happy endings that were so often lacking in the real world. She wanted heroes who truly love and value women, who find their true love inspiring, are fascinated by her, want to connect with her as a soulmate and fully open themselves to her on an emotional level. And so, Zoe began to write her romances.

A Zoe Allison novel promises a heroine who is not only her hero’s equal in ability and intellect, but whose hero equals her in emotional intelligence. Her characters overcome conflict infused with spine tingling sexual tension to forge a deep connection as soul mates as well as lovers, and ultimately, they both rescue each other emotionally. Even if they might begin their journey as enemies…

#Guest Post by Christina Bauer #Blog Tour #Fairies and Frosting by Christina Bauer @Xpresso Book Tours

Today is my stop on the blog tour for Fairies and Frosting, Book 7 in Christina Bauer’s series Fairy Tales of The Magicorum and I’m delighted to present Christina’s guest post!

My Most (and Least!) Favorite Fairy Tales

As part of the launch tour for my new book, FAIRIES AND FROSTING (Magicorum #7), the lovely folks at Reading Tonic have asked me to share some thoughts on fairy tales. This is an ideal topic since FAIRIES AND FROSTING is inspired by the story of Cinderella!

With that in mind, here are my most (and least!) favorite fairy tales…

THE THREE WORST FAIRY TALES IN THE HISTORY OF EVER, IMHO

Three. Princess and the Frog

In this story, the princess is a witch-with-a-b who chucks a defenseless amphibian against a wall. Not okay. She’s then rewarded for this violent behavior (I’m making finger quotes while typing rewarded) by getting a prince. Eew, eew, eew.

Two. Princess and the Pea

Here the so-called princess is identified by her ability to whine about bedding. Being a high-maintenance guest should not be equated with royalty. That’s just being a douchebag.

One. Goldilocks

This is another tale that I place in the category of high-maintenance behavior mistaken as cool. Breaking and entering is against the law, end of story. If one is in need of support, then it’s appropriate to wait outside the home for the family to return before helping yourself to their shit.

THREE SUPER-COOL FAIRY TALES THAT I ADORE

Three. Athena

This one is more of a myth than a fairy tale, but this is my list, so nyah. Athena is the Greco-Roman goddess of war. Even though she is the only deity (other than Zeus) who can wield the infamous thunderbolt, she normally uses clever ruses to defeat her opponents instead. That’s class.

Two. Isis

The Isis myth was a top story in northern Africa for more than 40,000 years. Its lessons even informed ancient Egypt, a culture that survived 3000 years (that’s more than ten times longer than the US, for those who are counting.) The tale is all about doing the right thing over materialism. Yes. I write about Isis in more detail here.

Three. Cinderella

This is my all-time favorite story and I adore the Grimm’s Fairy Tale version. In the original, Cinderella gets her own ass to the ball. No fairy godmothers involved. I adore this take on the character and it definitely inspired my approach while writing FAIRIES AND FROSTING.

So there you have it—my worst and first fairy tales. Hope you enjoyed my list and I hope to see you on a future book launch!

So our favorite couple devises a kick-ass scheme to save Le Charme. To announce their plan, Elle and Alec will hold a Glass Slipper Festival complete with music, dancing and cake. Lots of cake.

There’s only one problem. The Unseelie fae have returned.

Talk about bad news. No one combines lovely looks with dark intentions better than the Unseelie. Now, those nefarious fae want to destroy Elle, Alec and any hope for Le Charme. It doesn’t end there, either. The Unseelie are also targeting Elle’s stepsister, Agatha, as well as her old friend, Jacoby. And when will the Unseelie launch their deadly schemes? The Glass Slipper Festival.

Because fairies and frosting don’t mix.

Purchase

My thoughts:

This was my first book by Sian O’Gorman and I immediately fell in love with her writing style, the setting of a small villige at the seaside near Dublin and all the lovely, quirky, big-hearted charactersSian O’Gorman created in her Life’s What You Make It.

Olivia O’Neill is working in London as a PA of a highly-strung, overdemanding financial genius with a drink problem. She’s been doing it for ten years and cannot imagine going back to the tiny village where she was born and raised by her mum. Then suddenly her boss is sent to a rehab clinic and Liv gets an unexpected five week holiday to go back to Ireland and help out her mum who’s had an injury. Liv’s flatmate and best friend Roberto keeps telling her that she needs to find what makes her really happy and make her life the life she deserves, but up to now overworked Liv’s never had time to see the big picture.

Once she is back home, she is amazed at how easy it is to step back into her lovely, close-knit community and how right it feels to finally allow herself to do what she likes, wear things that she likes, and care for people around her. There’s a mystery of her own family to uncover, there are a few adorable pets, the village gossip to catch up on, the best friend to help, a festival to organise, possibly an old business to revive, and …a handsome man tofall in love with. Liv may have lost the sight of her own unique personality and her own dreams, but here she gets a second chance at living the best life possible and finding her happiness.

Liv’s a very likeable protagonist. She is sweet and considerate (despite feeling guilty for living too far away from her mum to be able to see and help her often enough). Loved her friends Roberto and Bronagh-so different and so much fun to read about. There is a whole cast of wonderful secondary characters that make you feel welcome in their village. There are also a few bad apples that create the tension and drama, but there is a great sense of confidence that whatever life throws at you, you are not helpless, you can choose how to deal with it.

I really enjoyed the setting- sun, salty air breeze and seagulls, lifelong friendships and family connections, old memories and new experiences that link you together. This was an enjoyable read, sweet, optimistic, heart-warming, and fun, and I will definitely be looking forward to reading more from this talented author.

Thank you to Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources, NetGalley and BoldwoodBooks for the ARC provided in exchange for an honest opinion.

#Can’t Wait Wednesday #All of Us Villains by Amanda Foody, Christine Lynn Herman

Can’t-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted  by Tressa at Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we’re excited about which we have yet to read. Generally they’re books that have yet to be released. It’s based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine.

The book I’m waiting for this Wednesday is…

The blockbuster co-writing debut of two up-and-coming powerhouses, All of Us Villains is The Hunger Games with magic

You Fell in Love With the Victors of the Hunger Games.
Now Prepare To Meet the Villains of the Blood Veil.

The Blood Moon rises. The Blood Veil falls.
The Tournament begins.

Every generation, at the coming of the Blood Moon, seven families in the remote city of Ilvernath each name a champion to compete in a secret tournament to the death.

The prize? Exclusive control over a secret wellspring of high magick, the most powerful resource in the world—one thought long depleted.

But this year a salacious tell-all book has exposed the tournament and thrust the seven new champions into the worldwide spotlight. The book also granted them valuable information previous champions never had—insight into the other families’ strategies, secrets, and weaknesses.
