What I read / listened to last week:
The Book of Cold Cases by Simone St.James- one of those rare occasions when I didn’t want to skim-read or peek at the last page to see how it all ends. The supernatural elements in the book are as chilling as ever – the book would be worth reading just for them, but, of course, there’s more-the topic Simone St.James chose for this mystery is one of the big ones- nature or nurture? what makes someone a murderer or a even more generally a criminal? you’ll just have to read the book to make up your mind on how successful she is in tackling the question and what her answer is 🙂
What I am reading/listening to now:
Raybearer by Jordan Ifueko- starting our new buddy read with Yesha
Book of Night by Holly Black- I think I’m going to be an outlier on this one. A lot of my friends complained about this one not living up to their expectations based on the Folk of the Air. So far it’s good and you can tell the general tone and the themes aren’t YA, there’s less optimism, more life experience and disappointment. The magic system and world-building are dark and complex, as you would expect from the title.
