#Blog Tour #Book Review #The Meet Cute Method by Portia MacIntosh #romcom @rararesources @Boldwood Books

Today I’m delighted to participate in the blog tour for The Meet Cute Method, the newest romcom release from one of my favourite authors- Portia MacIntosh.

The Meet Cute Method

Do movie romances ever happen in real life…?

Frankie doesn’t believe in true love. As relationships expert at popular magazine Stylife, she has learnt that dating disasters are far more common than happy ever afters.

So when she is tasked to find out if meet cutes can work in real life she is up for the challenge – but whether it’s being a damsel in distress with a flat tyre, or spilling coffee over a stranger, she isn’t convinced this can really lead to love.

But little does Frankie know that the ultimate meet cute opportunity is just around the corner. As she is whisked off her feet (all in the name of her work project of course…) perhaps true love isn’t just for the movies after all…?

My thoughts:

I f you woke me up in the middle of night and asked ‘Who is your favourite romcom author?’, I’d definitely say Portia MacIntosh and go back to sleep with a smile. There’s just something about Portia’s writing style and her humour that is so entertaining and uplifting.

34-year-old Frankie George is a journalist writing for a magazine called Stylife. She might be a bit jaded or even downright ‘cynical’ about love and romance, but don’t judge her too harshly- she is a relationship expert writing about Dating and Love, so being single kind of keeps her in the job. She isn’t bitter or disappointed…just not exactly actively looking for a relationship at the moment. She has other things on her mind-getting a promotion that would allow her to move out from the flat she shares with four other people (plus their partners) and motivating herself to feel happier at work…

Everything is going swimmingly until there’s a change of management and suddenly Frankie is forced to fight to keep her job and that involves an edgy, original article, which in her case is all about meet cutes. Yes, those meet cutes that are so frequent in romantic movies and, well, not so much in real life. You guessed it, Frankie will go through a series of ‘meet cute’ induced disasters that would cause her acute embarrassment if they weren’t there for ‘work research’, which must be the ultimate face saver excuse.

Frankie is the ulitimate response to the much hated ‘Not like other girls’ trope, because she could be your sister or your bestie or your co-worker who understands you without words. She is realistic and, to put it mildly not ‘always miraculously put together at any moment of day and night’. She makes mistakes and takes responsibility for them.

A seasoned romcom lover already suspects there’s bound to be a gorgeous neighbour or co-worker lurking somewhere behind the scenes and true love will triumph in the end. No spoilers here, but, yes, there is and I still loved Frankie’s journey to her own HEA.

As usual in Portia’s books, there is underlying kindness and honesty in its simple message- real relationships require dedication, trust and work. I loved this entertaining exploration of the tropes and patterns of behaviour we get consciously or subconsciously from the popculture.

Looking forward to Portia’s next book!

Thank you to NetGalley, Boldwood Books, and Rachel from Rachel’s Random Resources for the review copy, provided in exchnage for an honest opinion.
