What I read / listened to last week
Audiobook – Outlander by Diana Gabaldon ( Narrated by Davina Porter)
Outlander had been on my tbr list for years (the book was published in 1991 and will celebrate its 30th birthday in July). This is one of the books that doesn’t require an introduction or description. I can sum up the 32-hour experience of listening to this historical romance in two words- totally gripping!
Just in case you don’t know what it’s all about, here is the goodreads blurb:
The year is 1945. Claire Randall, a former combat nurse, is just back from the war and reunited with her husband on a second honeymoon when she walks through a standing stone in one of the ancient circles that dot the British Isles. Suddenly she is a Sassenach—an “outlander”—in a Scotland torn by war and raiding border clans in the year of Our Lord…1743.
Hurled back in time by forces she cannot understand, Claire is catapulted into the intrigues of lairds and spies that may threaten her life, and shatter her heart. For here James Fraser, a gallant young Scots warrior, shows her a love so absolute that Claire becomes a woman torn between fidelity and desire—and between two vastly different men in two irreconcilable lives.
What I am reading now:
Death at Rainbow Cottage (DCI Satterthwaite #4) by Jo Allen
At the end of the rainbow, a man lies dead.
The apparently motiveless murder of a man outside the home of controversial equalities activist Claud Blackwell and his neurotic wife, Natalie, is shocking enough for a peaceful local community. When it’s followed by another apparently random killing immediately outside Claud’s office, DCI Jude Satterthwaite has his work cut out. Is Claud the killer, or the intended victim?
What I’m reading next:
Mr Right Across the Street by Kathryn Freeman
Mia Abbott’s move to Manchester was supposed to give her time and space from all the disastrous romantic choices she’s made in her past. But then the hot guy who lives opposite – the one who works out every day at exactly 10 a.m., not that Mia has noticed thank-you-very-much – starts leaving notes in his window…for her.
Bar owner Luke Doyle has his own issues to deal with but as he shows Mia the sites of her new city he also shows her what real romance looks like for the first time. And when he cooks up a signature cocktail in her honour, she realises that the man behind the bar is even more enticing than any of his creations. And once she’s had a taste she knows it will never be enough!
… and, of course, like a moth to a flame, I’m drawn to…
Dragonfly in Amber ( Outlander #2)
How did your last week go and what are you reading this week?
You have an interesting list of books to read. I am reading DEATH AT INTERMISSION BY Alexis Morgan. I had forgotten how much I enjoyed The Dixie Hemmenway series so I am reading CURIOSITY KILLED THE CAT SITTER.

The Outlander has always been my guilty pleasure. Did you watch the series?

I haven’t, but I’m considering it. How does it compare to the book? Jamie on the tie-in edition cover looks great, but what about the rest? Did you like it?

This is one time I enjoyed a series to a book. In both it is a little dull until she time travels. Jamie is georgous.

The first part seems never ending, doesn’t it? Jamie is perfect for his role.

I downloaded a free audiobook of The Outlander but have not listened to it yet. The length scares me. I have not watched the series either. So glad you love it though Toni. I want to read Mr. Right Across the Street as well. I enjoyed her last book. Have a great week.

It was totally worth it, Carla! Davina Porter did a fantastic job with her great range of accents and expression. I never wanted the book to end.

I’m already a couple hours into the second book and she keeps finding new ways of differentiating between the characters. Fabulous narrator!

I hope that you enjoy your next read (: and that you get a chance to continue the Outlander series like you want to. I’ve just finished rereading The Cruel Prince ready to finally read the series finale once I’ve finished the rest of my series re-read.

It was pretty good. She’s quite intelligent, so it was well written. I think she reiterates certain things, so I think there’s some editing issues, but thought it was well done
